(Photos by Keith Griffin) I’ll admit my prejudice: My carefactor on Scion products is about half a point higher than my concern over Taylor Swift’s dating history. But the Retro Rolling Riley Hawk Scion xB showed at SEMA 2014 is the coolest thing I’ve laid eyes on since Tony Alva cleared the coping on his neighbor’s pool.
It’s a perfect blend of 1970s skateboarding, CB culture, and the custom van craze, put together by Scott Kanemura of KMA productions.
Inspired by the interests of professional skateboarder Riley Hawk, the vehicle features both the old and new: wood-grain décor, a mini fridge, shag carpet, an 8-track player, a Big Pioneer Sound System and the ability to play guitar through the audio system using an iPad mini with the Amplitube app as mixer.
It’s all there, man: The Back Off mud flaps, the wood dash, the Sabbath 8-Track. I’m a little disappointed that there’s no chrome foot gas pedal, but I guess I’ll survive.
The cargo box features an INNO rack system to store skateboards, the plush captain’s chairs swivel, the shag — shags — and a motorized rear-facing monitor shows a non-stop succession of that one Charlie’s Angels episode Stacy Peralta was on.
“The Scion xB really does look like something straight from 1975,” Riley Hawk said. “From shag carpet to the retro paint job, it’s the perfect mix between modern and vintage.”
