You could think of brighter things to put on your New York vanity plate than a misspelled allusion to a militant terrorist organization. New York residents and the DMV seem to be worked up about it enough that it made the evening news.
CBS 2 reports the flat black Dodge Charger was parked at the corner of Bay Ridge and 3rd avenues in Brooklyn, and attracted the attention of several passers-by.
“I find it frightening to look at and I’m a little worried myself,” one woman said.
The plate doesn’t exactly spell out the name of Hamas, since it’s got an extra M, but the guess is that it’s some kind of a reference to the group, which has been designated a terrorist organization by the U.S. Department of State.
The New York DMV approved and issued the tags in the first place, but recalled them and ordered the owner to remove them. The DMV called the plates “patently offensive” because “the group represented by the name on the plate is on the list of entities designated by the U.S. Government as a terrorist organization.”
