The 2019 Subaru Crosstrek hybrid is set to make its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show at the end of the month as Subaru’s first-ever plug-in hybrid. It will arrive in dealerships at the end of the year.
Power will come from a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder direct injection engine with all-wheel drive and Subaru’s new StarDrive technology. This system uses two electric motors. The first functions as a starter. The second powers the Crosstrek during hybrid and electric drive modes. It also charges the hybrid battery under regenerative braking.
The Crosstrek Hybrid has a top speed of 65 mph in fully electric mode and is one second faster than the gas-powered Crosstrek. It can operate in electric mode for up to 17 miles. Fuel economy is up to 90 MPGe with a range of 480 miles.
Subaru also developed an electronically controlled brake system to optimize brake force distribution between the regenerative and mechanical brakes. Not only does this maximize regeneration, it also improves efficiency and helps extend battery life.
As a Subaru, the Crosstrek is still plenty capable. There’s X-Mode and hill descent control for managing off-road adventures along with the same 8.7 inches of ground clearance found in the gas Crosstrek.
It can tow up to 1,000 pounds and has ample interior cargo room. The rear seats split-fold 60/40 to provide 43.1 cubic feet for cargo. It’s ready for whatever adventure you have planned for your next getaway.
Standard features include an 8-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The All-Weather package is also standard with heated front seats, windshield wiper de-icer, and heated mirror.
Safety comes through Subaru’s Eyesight suite of driver assistance features. This includes pre-collision braking and throttle management, adaptive cruise control, lane departure and sway waring, and lane keep assist. There’s also blind spot detection with lane change assist and rear cross-traffic alert.
Unique to the Crosstrek hybrid is a pedestrian alert system. This plays an audible warning anytime your speed drops below 20 mph to make sure pedestrians aren’t surprised when your silently roll down the road.
Pricing on the 2019 Subaru Crosstrek plug-in hybrid starts at $34,995.
