Some cars purchases are practical. You spend weeks trying to figure out which one is the best deal, is the best long-term value, and best fits your personal needs. If you’re buying an Aston Martin, then none of that stuff matters. This isn’t a practical car and doesn’t pretend to be one. This is a luxury sports car that will put a smile on your face simply sitting in the driveway and have all the neighbors coming over to say hello.
The chance to drive an Aston Martin DB11 doesn’t come along every day. This rarified gem spent a little time in New England recently for the New England Motor Press Association Ragtop Ramble. This annual event sees automakers bringing their favorite convertibles up to Massachusetts for a day of driving up the coast. Not every car is a convertible, however, which is how the Aston Martin ended up coming to the party. It’s also how we had the chance to spend a weekend behind the wheel.
It’s the kind of car that, even if you don’t know a thing about cars, will make you take notice. It is long and low and incredibly sleek. The DB11 looks like something special and at $250,000 it is something special. There’s hand stitched leather pretty much everywhere you look. The bits that aren’t leather are sleek metal and carbon fiber. The interior is nothing short of stunning.
Technically it seats four people, but it’s realistically a two-seater and those two people are very lucky. Push the start button and you’re rewarded with the aggressive sound of a 600-horsepower, 5.2-liter twin-turbo V12 engine. If passersby didn’t notice you before, they’ll notice you the second you start that glorious engine.
It’s powerful and handles beautifully. Merging into traffic is effortless and if you need a burst of speed it’s right there, just be careful how hard you stomp that gas pedal. The DB11 packs a punch, but is so smooth you won’t realize how quickly you’ve reached that pesky speed limit.
As fantastic as it is, however, driving an Aston Martin isn’t simply about driving a powerful car. There are cars with more power. There are cars that attract more attention. This car, though, this one is an experience. You aren’t just driving a car. You’re driving a legacy. James Bond drives an Aston Martin. Tom Brady drives an Aston Martin. And if you’re one of the lucky few, then you can drive an Aston Martin, too.
