Buying a Mercedes might seem like an outrageously expensive proposition. The brand has a solid reputation for building luxurious, powerful, and expensive cars. They also build cars with less expensive price tags that make them more attainable than you might expect. The C300 cabriolet, which is a fancy way of saying convertible, has a starting price of $52,900. Cheap it’s not, but you don’t have to be Midas to buy one.

We had the chance to spend some time with the C300 cabriolet during the New England Motor Press Association’s annual Ragtop Ramble. This event gathers automotive journalists from the region along with cars from a variety of automakers to drive from Massachusetts up to the coast of Maine. We had the good fortune of driving the Mercedes-Benz C300.

Power for this convertible comes from a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder turbo with 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque paired to a 9-speed automatic transmission. There are also steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters should you want to take more control. That turbo engine gives this Mercedes plenty of power with smooth shifts and an equally smooth ride. It’s aggressive, but never harsh. That’s the luxury car part coming into play. The ride quality is fantastic making it a great car for winding drives up the coast even if the roads get bumpy.

Inside, there’s plenty of soft leather and the seats are ridiculously comfortable, but it’s the overall impression that makes a Mercedes interior exceptional. The C300 has a luxury vibe without being flashy or garish. It’s subdued in its elegance and not out to attract the attention of every person on the street. It will, however, turn heads because this is a good-looking car. Drop the top on a sunny day and people will be smiling and casting an envious eye in your direction.

Summertime is all about enjoying the weather and a convertible is the perfect way to take advantage of every minute. The Mercedes-Benz C300 convertible offers a powerful and stylish way to make the most of the sun before the weather turns.
