The market for crossovers is competitive, with automakers introducing new models and updating old ones in the hopes of luring buyers. The Ford Escape benefits from a major mid-cycle refresh this year with design updates, new engine choices, and an upgraded infotainment system.

The styling updates include a resculpted front end and the addition of the Sport Appearance Package available on the SE and Titanium trims. This adds black accents and 19-inch Ebony Black wheels that help the Escape stand out from other crossovers.

Engine choices include a standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder or two EcoBoost options. There’s a 1.5-liter EcoBoost or a 2.0-liter twin-scroll turbocharged variant. The larger EcoBoost engine makes driving a crossover fun, but the smaller EcoBoost falls short, especially during hard acceleration.

Ford’s updated Sync 3 infotainment system includes both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 2017 Escape is the first Ford to feature this integration, which takes the screen you see on your smartphone and mimics it on the infotainment screen in the car.

The base infotainment system, however, is not Sync 3 but the more limited Sync. It’s nowhere near as good as Sync 3 and doesn’t include Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. The base S trim of the Escape is available only with Sync, so you’ll have to step up to at least the SE trim in order to get the full benefits of Ford’s latest infotainment updates.

Sync 3 also is the only way to get FordPass. This app lets you control select functions like locking and unlocking your car and remote start directly from your smartphone.

Three different trim levels start with the Base S at $23,600 and top out with the Titanium at $29,100. This makes the Escape an affordable crossover, even for those on a tight budget.

Here’s how the 2017 Ford Escape compares to its competitors.

Though there’s better cargo room in the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V, the Escape does well on fuel economy. It also is a standout in price and can be well-equipped while remaining affordable. The 2017 Ford Escape offers a combination of the features and utility crossover buyers want at a price that makes it an attractive choice.
