The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport gets a few small changes this year. There’s a new front fascia with Mitsubishi’s Dynamic Shield and the interior has a new steering wheel, new seat fabrics, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. What hasn’t changed is the Outlander Sport’s value. This is a 5-person crossover that can be had with plenty of amenities for under $30,000.

There are two engine choices across four different trim levels. The base ES is the only trim available with the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. You can also choose between a 5-speed manual or continuously variable transmission (CVT).

The larger 2.4-liter engine with its 168 horsepower gives both better performance and more trim choices although it’s only available with the CVT. Choose from the ES, SE, SEL, or GT depending on the level of interior comfort you want in your crossover. They all have room for 5 passengers and a choice of either front-wheel drive or all-wheel control.

The Outlander Sport is a value crossover. Its price is what makes it a superstar compared to the rest. It also has decent styling and a nice interior, especially in the higher trim levels.

Where the Outlander Sport falls short is in performance. When you press that accelerator, the response isn’t quick nor is it impressive. What might not look like a value car feels like one when you accelerate up to highway speeds.

Here’s how this crossover matches up to the competition.

As we mentioned, the big thing with the Outlander Sport is the price. Our well-equipped SEL was still only $25,395, which makes it a true bargain. Its compact size is also a plus and makes it easy to navigate narrow city streets.

That compact size, however, means you don’t have the same cargo space you’ll find in other crossovers. Passenger space is good and you won’t feel cramped, even with five on board, but when it comes time to carry cargo, the Outlander Sport lags behind the competition.

The 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is a value conscious crossover that provides an affordable option for families on a budget. It has a nice interior and is comfortable. On the other hand, a lack of cargo room and lackluster performance give shoppers good reason to check out the competion.
