There’s something innately cool and futuristic about the idea of a flying car. It sets that line from Back to the Future ringing through your head. “Roads? Where we’re going we don’t need roads.” AeroMobil has promised the world a flying car and in this video, it looks just brilliant.
At first inspection, it appears to be a very sci-fi car but doesn’t look like something designed to fly. The two carbon-fiber wings fold into the body so you don’t really see that they’re even wings. Still, it definitely doesn’t look like anything else on the road and will turn heads just for its odd shape and bright blue and white paint scheme.
Open the door and then suddenly it does look very much like a plane. The cockpit boasts an incredible array of buttons and dials that the pilot will need when he tires of the roadways and heads for the sky.
Seeing pictures of the AeroMobil 3.0 is one thing, but to see it actually make the transformation from car to plane is pretty amazing. There isn’t some complicated process that requires things to be moved around on the vehicle’s exterior, but rather just a switch that engages the wings so that they slowly fold out from the body.
Pull off the road, find a field at least 656 feet long to hit the needed 80 MPH and the car takes flight. This is still a test vehicle so it may change slightly before it hits production, but it has come far enough in the process that they’re driving it on public roads and taking it for test flights.
Before you get too excited, it’s not going to be as simple as just buying one of these things once they’re for sale. This is still a vehicle in the middle of development and testing so it’s not ready yet, it only seats two so it’s not a family hauler, and you will need both a driver’s license and a pilot’s license if you intend to fly. If you start taking flying lessons now, you just might be ready by the time the AeroMobil hits the showroom floor.
