That Hatfields and McCoys have nothing on the rivalry that exists between the Ford Mustang and the Chevy Camaro. Car enthusiasts have been taking sides over this one for years and the release of the new 2015 Mustang has only fanned the flames of war. Turning those flames into a completely uncontrolled bonfire is this video that pits the 2015 Ford Mustang GT against the 2015 Chevy Camaro SS 1LE.
Despite those who argue that one is clearly the better car of the two, always has been, and always will be, they’re similar in a lot of ways. Both feature 6-speed manual transmissions and the two in this head-to-head have been equipped with their respective performance packs. Even horsepower and torque numbers come in darn close to each other.
The Mustang has 426 horsepower at 5900 rpm while the Camaro has 435 horsepower at 6500 rpm so no clear winner comparing those numbers. Their curb weights are also incredibly close even though the Mustang has a a smaller footprint. The Camaro comes in with a curb weight of 3886 pounds with the Mustang coming in at 3814. That’s just a 72 pound difference.
Perhaps the only place where there’s an obvious winner is in the price department with the Mustang coming in at $46,380 and the Camaro coming in $4,650 less at $41,730. Really though, who the heck cares how much you might save? All anyone really wants to know when they’re at looking these two brutes is how they match up when pushed to their limits.
Motor Trend decided to answer that question, pitting these two cars against each other in a series of tests that showed off the strengths and weaknesses of each. They compare the cars on the street but even better, they compare them on the track in the hands of race car driver Randy Pobst at Willow Springs.
Sure, most people aren’t likely to take these two out on the track and drive them like Pobst, but it’s still a thrill to see what he can make them do and to hear his thoughts on how they both fare. Watch the video to see the results and find out if your favorite wins the day.
