The 2019 Chevy Blazer made its debut in Atlanta to somewhat mixed reviews. Although this is an all-new Blazer, the name has quite a history so fans of vintage Blazers had their expectations. While folks without those expectations seem quite pleased, the diehard fans aren’t quite so excited.
The last time we saw a Chevrolet Blazer was in 2005 and it was a body-on-frame vehicle. Today’s Blazer has a unibody structure the same as the GMC Acadia. This has some fans upset, but the reality is this is the way of the world in modern SUVs. Plenty of existing badges have made the switch to unibody with great success.
Okay, let’s assume you can get past that change. The next thing you have to get past is the new Blazer’s capabilities. You may remember this SUV as something that was rugged, off-road capable, and perfectly at home where lesser vehicles never stood a chance. Once again, that’s not this Blazer.
Crossovers are a big deal right now, so Chevrolet took a modern practical approach o the new Blazer and targeted people shopping for a 5-passenger crossover. It sits between the Equinox and Traverse in size and in style with a typical crossover look. Where Chevrolet had a little fun and made the Blazer distinctive is the front end.
Here, they decided to borrow from the Camaro. Where it looks like just another crossover from the back, up front feels a bit like an homage to its rugged history. It’s wide and tall with a big hood and a bold grille. Timid and svelte the Blazer is not and we like how this makes the new Blazer stand out.
There will be base, RS, and Premium trims. The Blazer RS gets blacked out exterior accents and available 21-inch wheels while the Premium goes for more of an upscale vibe with chrome finishes. Available features include hitch guidance, electronic locking glove box, hands free liftgate, wireless charging with six USB ports, heated outboard rear seats, and a new cargo management system.
Power for the Blazer comes from a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with 193 horsepower and 188 lb-ft of torque or a 3.6-liter V6 which gives a big bump to 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. No matter which you choose, it’s paired to a 9-speed automatic transmission with available all-wheel drive.
If you’re looking for the Blazer of old, then you’re going to be disappointed because this isn’t that vehicle. While that may upset purists who want the Blazer to be a rugged, go anywhere SUV, Chevrolet’s approach makes sense.
What people want are crossovers with style and plenty of features and that’s what they’ll get with the 2019 Chevrolet Blazer. Expect to see the Blazer in dealerships early next year with pricing announced closer to the on-sale date.
