In the 1950s and 1960s, more than 4,000 drive-in movie theaters dotted the countryside. Today, just 348 drive-in movie theaters still exist in the United States. Just 21 still exist in New England, so when you find one, you have to celebrate it. The Mendon Twin in Mendon, Massachusetts is not only offering movies, but a car show every other Thursday, beginning tomorrow night.
The Mendon Twin on Route 16 in Mendon, Massachusetts has undergone a real transformation over the last few years. The theater was purchased by the Andelman brothers, who also produce and host a successful local restaurant show called The Phantom Gourmet. Over the last three seasons, the Andelmans have managed to make the Mendon Twin a successful theater, showing first-run movies from spring until Halloween.
This summer, the Mendon Twin is hosting a regular car show at the drive-in. The ever-other-Thursday shows run from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, and if you want, you can stick around for the movies.
The schedule for this summer:
This week’s features include Tomorrowland and Pitch Perfect 2 on Screen One, and San Andreas and Mad Max 2 on Screen Two. We took the Dodge Challenger Hellcat to see Mad Max 2 a few weeks ago and had a blast. Throughout the summer, the Mendon Twin runs some classic films, too. Last year, we took in Jaws, which was a real treat to see on the gigantic screen.
