NHTSAFor the sake of accuracy allow me to stipulate that the vehicles listed in these recall notifications are sold by automakers based anywhere except the U.S. Some of the vehicles listed below are manufactured within the United States; nevertheless they are marketed and sold by automakers that are headquartered in other countries. As  proud Americans, we should be thankful for the foreign automakers that spend their money to build state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in North America and provide jobs for American workers.  Their diligence in keeping car owners apprised of possible safety recalls should also be commended. Here are the latest in recalls from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).


Remember: Your vehicle manufacturing date (month/year) is located inside of the driver’s door jamb on most vehicles.


NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V262000

ForenzaSuzuki Recall number: XA

Affected Vehicles: Certain 2004 to 2008 Suzuki Forenza and 2005 to 2008 Suzuki Reno vehicles that were manufactured between September 1, 2003 and July 30, 2008.  Approximately 184,244 vehicles are affected by this recall.


Cause: Excessive heat, generated from a partial electrical short, could melt the headlamp switch and/or daytime running lamp (DRL) module.


Consequence: The overheated lighting component could result in an inoperative headlamp or DRL condition that would increase the risk of a motor vehicle collision. It is also possible that a vehicle fire could start in the steering column.


Correction: The proper remedy for this recall condition is still under consideration and no schedule of owner notification has been released. Vehicle owners will be notified by mail with further instructions for correcting this situation. Repairs are expected to be performed at local Suzuki dealers at no charge to vehicle owners.


NOTES: If you feel that you own a vehicle that is affected by this condition, you may contact Suzuki directly at 1-800-934-0934. On a personal note; I would avoid parking or storing the affected vehicle indoors, especially in an inhabited building. For total safety disconnect the negative terminal of the battery when the vehicle is not in use. If smoke is detected rising from the steering column/headlamp switch area, pul over immediately and turn the vehicle off. Turn the headlamps/DRL off. If the smoking persists or if flames are seen disconnect the battery and take necessary measures to extinguish the fire. As a last resort, leave the vehicle and move yourself and occupants a sufficient distance away, call emergency personnel.


NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V218000

Rogue 1Vehicles Affected: 2014 Nissan Rogue vehicles manufactured between January 10, 2014 and January 17, 2014.  Approximately 1,644 vehicles are affected.


Cause: In the affected vehicles, the intermediate steering shaft may be connected to the upper steering shaft using an incorrect (or rogue) bolt.


Consequence: The bolt could become loose and fall completely out of the shaft resulting in a total loss of steering and vehicle control.


Correction: Nissan North America will notify potentially affected vehicle owners by mail with instructions for providing a vehicle inspection and repair procedure at the local Nissan dealership, free of charge. The recall if expected to officially begin by the end of June, 2014.


NOTE: If you believe that you own a Rogue affected by this condition, then have your vehicle inspected by a trained automotive professional, immediately. The potential for a catastrophic crash is far too great to take unnecessary chances with this condition. If you lose the ability to steer while driving; first do not panic, second apply the brakes and bring the vehicle to a halt and last, call a tow truck. You may call Nissan directly at 1-800-647-7261.


NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V229000

PathfinderVehicles Affected: 2014 Nissan Pathfinder and Rogue vehicles and 2014 Infiniti QX60 vehicles. Only approximately 334 vehicles are affected.


Cause: One wheel lug nut may have been insufficiently tightened on each right side wheel during the manufacturing process.


Consequence: If a single lug nut on each right side wheel were not properly torqued, the nut in question could become loose enough to fall from the wheel stud. In an absolute “worst case scenario” the remaining lug nuts could become loose, allowing the wheel to fall from the vehicle resulting in a motor vehicle crash.


Correction: Nissan North America will notify owners of potentially affected vehicles with instructions for having the wheel lug nuts inspected and re-torqued or replaced at no charge. Owner notification should begin by the end of June, 2014.


NOTE: If you feel that you own a vehicle affected by this condition, you may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261. As part of a weekly vehicle safety check, checking to see that all of your wheel lug nits are tight is recommended. Never attempt to drive your vehicle with lug nuts which are apparently loose. If one or two are loose you can probably tighten them with the vehicle resting on the ground. If more than half of the lug nuts are loose, jacking the vehicle to remove the weight from the wheel is strongly recommended, before tightening. Always perform the final tightening with the wheel firmly secured by the ground or the vehicle service brake.


NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V274000

highlanderVehicles Affected: Certain 2014 Toyota Highlander manufactured between the dates of April 23, 2014 and April 29, 2014. Approximately 231 vehicles will be affected.


Cause: The adjustable inboard seat track of the second row, right-hand seat, on certain models may not fully lock into the first, second, and third forward most positions. This condition means that these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), section 201 under the sub-heading entitled “Seating Systems.”


Consequence: If the affected vehicle were to be involved in a motor vehicle collision, the seat could become detached from the vehicle, placing the occupant at a higher risk of injury.


Correction: Toyota will notify owners of affected vehicles with information about inspection and repair/replacement of the seat mounting system, free of charge. The notifications are scheduled to begin in June of 2014.


NOTE: If you feel that your vehicle is affected by this condition, you may contact Toyota customer care at 1-800-331-4331. Vehicle owners should avoid allowing passengers to occupy the affected seat until the necessary repairs have been performed.


NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V273000

SiennaVehicles Affected: Certain 2004 through 2011 Toyota Sienna vans that are currently registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. Approximately 370,000 Sienna vans will be affected.


Cause: The spare tire, located underneath the vehicle, is secured using a small winch with a steel cable. Weather conditions that affect the roadway in the states listed above necessitate the use of sand and/or salt, which could corrode the steel cable used in the spare tire retainer winch.


Consequence: If the  steel cable becomes excessively corroded, the spare tire could fall from the vehicle and potentially cause a motor vehicle crash.


Correction: The Toyota Motor Corporation will notify owners of affected vehicle by mail with the first of a two part recall campaign notification. This portion of the recall will advise vehicle owners to schedule an appointment with a Toyota dealer to have the spare tire relocated to the passenger compartment of the vehicle in question. The second part of the recall notification will taje place when a permanent repair strategy has been determined and the spare tires can be securely returned to the underbelly of the van. Both of these inspection and repair procedures will be performed at no cost to the vehicle owner. No schedule has been released by Toyota regarding these repairs.
