GM Continues Recall Notices

The third portion of our safety recall update will feature a manufacturer that is very familiar with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and newspaper headlines. General Motors is one of the largest automakers in the world and they have seen more than their share of recalls since the beginning of 2014. The truth is that these recalls don’t prove that GM makes bad cars. The recalls prove that GM is a North American automaker that is determined to continue making the same great cars that they have been making since 1908, that they are going to make them safer and more reliable than ever, and that they will never again be satisfied with “run-of-the-mill.” From 1931 until 2007, GM was the largest automaker on the planet and these recalls prove that they are determined to reach that pinnacle again. NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V460000
General Motors recall Campaign Number: 14505

Vehicles Affected:  Certain 2009 & 2010 Chevrolet Aveo and 2009 Pontiac G3 vehicles. Approximately 1,968 vehicles are expected for inclusion in this recall campaign.

Cause:  Some vehicles may have been assembled using the incorrect type of brake fluid in the brake master cylinder. The fluid used does not prevent corrosion. The braking system and particularly the Anti Lock Brake (ABS) hydraulic control unit could be compromised.

Concern: If the ABS valves become corroded, braking performance will almost certainly be hindered and the risk of a motor vehicle crash will increase.

Correction: GM will notify owners with specific instructions for having the ABS module replaced, free of charge. Some vehicles may have had the ABS module replaced under a previous customer satisfaction campaign, in which case it will not need to be replaced again. This recall is expected to begin in September 2014. Vehicle owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), and 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac).

NOTE: If you feel that your vehicle is affected by the conditions of this recall, then have a qualified professional examine the quality of your brake fluid at your earliest convenience.

NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V488000
General Motors Recall Campaign Number: 14171

Vehicles Affected: Certain 2013 Buick Encore vehicles manufactured from August 23, 2012 through March 1, 2013 and 2013 Cadillac ATS vehicles manufactured from April 23, 2012 through May 1, 2013. Approximately 48,114 vehicles are expected for inclusion under the conditions of this recall campaign.

Cause: The driver and passenger safety belt pre-tensioner cables may not lock into the retracted position, allowing the seat belts to extend under “lock” conditions.

Concern: If the safety belt does not remain locked in position (under certain circumstances) seat occupants could be placed at an increased risk of injury during a motor vehicle crash due to a lack of passenger restraint.

Correction: GM will notify owners by mail with detailed instructions for having both lap safety belt pre-tensioners replaced, free of charge. Since parts are not currently available, GM will initially send an interim notification letter in early October 2014 recognizing the defect, followed by a second letter when the parts become available. Vehicle owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006.

NOTE: If you own one of these vehicles, you may save yourself time and frustration by noting the part number from the original safety belt ad having it on hand when you call the dealership to schedule repairs. It can be found on the white tag that is visible with the safety belt fully extended.

NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V489000
General Motors Recall Campaign Number: 14476

Vehicles Affected: 2014 & 2015 Chevrolet Impala vehicles manufactured from May 7, 2014 through July 28, 2014. Approximately 14,940 cars are expected for inclusion in this recall campaign.

Cause: In the event of an accident, the center storage console may not stay latched. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 201, “Occupant Protection in Interior Impact.”

Concern: The storage compartment door may not remain closed in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of occupant injury.

Correction: Parts to remedy this condition are not currently available. GM will send owners an interim notification in early October 2014, and will send a second letter when parts are available. At that time dealers will replace the console storage compartment door inertia latch, free of charge. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020.

NOTE: Don’t place any heavy items in the console until the door is repaired.
