Nissan’s Project Titan Returns from 10-Day Alaskan Challenge

In support of the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) and as part of Nissan’s Project Titan, WWP alumni David Guzman and Kevin McMahon have just returned from the adventure of a lifetime. For the last ten days this crew has piloted a specially designed Nissan Titan pickup truck through one of the harshest environments in the world. Accompanied by a Youtube documentary crew, this crack team and their Titan (designed almost exclusively by fans from Nissan’s Facebook page) tackled this extreme environment pulling a one-of-a-kind camping trailer behind and successfully completed the ten day journey across the Alaskan wilderness and back to the Texas State Fair. The entire trip was well documented and fans can follow along a mile-by-mile journey on the Nissan Facebook page.

The truck began as a 2014 Nissan Titan Crew Cab Pro-4X with an Endurance 5.6-liter V8 engine that is capable of producing 317-horsepower and 385 lb.-ft. of torque. The Titan, factory equipped with front skid plates, a locking rear differential, and a towing capacity rated at 9,300-pounds, is up for nearly any task with some serious off-road credibility in stock trim. However, Project Titan would require some additional off-road readiness. To meet these needs Nissan chose to seek consultation from the very fans who would scrutinize the trip via video diary.

Suspension Upgrades

Before traversing Alaska’s shallow creeks, large rocks, and deep mud, Project Titan would receive a four-inch suspension lift from PRG with end links and upper control arms included. Radflow remote reservoir shocks yield added ground clearance and a set of AirLift rear airbags help the suspension to maintain stability under the added load of ten days worth of cargo and camping gear (including a trailer).

Wheels and Tires

Filling in those elongated fender wells are a set of 35-inch Nitto Trail Grappler M/T tires wrapped around all-black 18-inch Fuel Revolver D525 wheels. This combination will not only handle any off-road situation that might be encountered but also look great. The Trail Grappler has deep, trench-like grooves and a tread pattern designed for maximum lateral traction. They should be perfect for traversing the deep mud of the Alaskan wilderness without any trouble. Numerous spare tires and wheels were also part of the additional cargo (just in case).

Off-Road Equipment

While a set of Warn Zeon winches (one for the front and one for the rear) were mandatory, the fan customization project allowed Nissan Trucks Facebook fans to select the front and rear bumpers. In choosing the most rugged equipment available they selected a massive steel unit called an ARB Deluxe Bull Bar as a replacement for the front bumper. A matching rear bumper adds rear-end protection and an assortment of LED lighting and sonar sensors (for both front and rear) complete the package. The Titan Pro-4X is also equipped with an electronically locking factory rear differential and an ARB air-locker for the front. A switch panel mounted on the dash gives the driver instant access to the air-locker when extra traction is required. More lighting is added via roof-mounted light bar with low-profile LED lighting to minimize current draw and maximize visibility.
