The Jaguar F-Type is a stunning vehicle that is at home on the track as it is on the road. There are eight models to choose from in a coupe or convertible with both automatic and manual transmission options but, if you’re lucky, then you can get yourself behind the wheel of the exclusive Jaguar F-Type Project 7.
The Project 7 made its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed back in 2013 and was intended as nothing more than a concept design. Engineers and designers spent only four months putting it together and it received such a positive response that a production model was announced the following year.
No more than 250 units of this F-Type are due to be produced. Each has the most powerful engine Jaguar has ever built with a specially tuned 5.0-liter supercharged V8 that produces 575 horsepower. They didn’t stop with the engine, but also modified the design of the Project 7 so it stands out from the typical F-Type.
The front end, side sills, rear diffuser, and rear spoiler are all specific to the Project 7. The most noticeable difference, aside from the unique paint job which features a bulls-eye on the door waiting for your number, is the driver-side aero haunch. There is still room for two, but it’s designed with the idea that one person will be in this and that person will likely be whipping this around a track as fast as possible.
At the International Motor Press Association Test Days held at the Monticello Motor Club in New York, Jaguar brought a Project 7 to the track. They’re no fools, so they didn’t let any of us hoi polloi drive the car, but they did let us sit in the passenger seat and go for a ride with one of Monticello’s instructors behind the wheel. So, what’s it like to take a spin in the most powerful Jaguar ever built?
It is exhilarating and terrifying and completely amazing. I could go all professional automotive journalist and pretend like I was cool with the whole thing and utterly unimpressed, but that would be a lie. Every person who got into that car later got out of that car with a permanent grin affixed to their face.
It would have been great to actually drive the Project 7, but unless you’re a trained, highly-skilled driver, there’s no way you’re going to take the same advantage of a track. You’ll have a heck of a lot of fun, but only someone who really knows what they’re doing can truly show off this car’s capabilities.
Sitting in the passenger seat as that someone put the car through its paces was incredible. There is a sense of raw power begging to be let loose, but at the same time, the Project 7 never felt like it was on the edge of control. My driver looked completely nonplussed, chatting as we drove like it was no big deal, just a run to the corner store for some milk.
If you had this thing in your garage, then you’d be running out to the corner store as often as possible just to get a little more time behind the wheel.
