Everyone has a bad day and does something stupid. It might be as simple as missing the curb in front of you and nearly faceplanting in the street. Maybe it’s a bit more dramatic and you manage to walk into a glass door you didn’t notice. You could also be this guy, who drove his Ferrari straight off the end of a pier into the water.
Your first thought is likely that he didn’t have his wits about him and was either on drugs or drunk. Nope. The man, 48-year-old James Mucciaccio Jr., was apparently completely sober. In fact, there’s security footage of the whole thing and it all looks very calm right until the moment that he drives his car into the drink.
The incident happened on the morning of December 26 at a dock on Palm Beach Inlet. The Ferrari 360 was parked at the gated dock and an officer approached for a conversation we all really wish was recorded.
Mucciaccio talked with the officer, then headed back to his car to back out of the dock. It seemed like everything was going just fine. He accelerated slowly in the correct direction away from the water, but then it all went sideways.
He put the car in drive, gunned the engine, and went flying off the end of the dock and into the water with a rather dramatic splash. It wasn’t an accident and he apparently intended to drive his car into the water.
As for why, no one seems to know. Mucciaccio was checked out at the scene and was fine, but the same can’t be said for his Ferrari, which landed on the ocean floor some 30 feet below the surface.
The Palm Beach Police Department Dive Team was tasked with raising the car from the water. It took divers, chains, and inflatables to get it to the surface at another beach down the way that was more accessible for the team.
So, if you think you’re having a rough day, at least you didn’t drive your Ferrari into the ocean.
