Ford Focus RS Sideways

Everyone is eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Ford Focus RS on US shores. The first two generations of the sporty little hatchback were only available in Europe, leaving all of us over here out of luck. In a few more months, the third generation will finally arrive stateside and former Stig Ben Collins has a video primer on the fun to be had with the different drive modes.

There are four different drive mode choices, starting with Normal, which delivers exactly the ride you’d expect. It’s the average, everyday, ho-hum, setting that you’ll want to use when you’re cruising the highway or running errands around town. This is where the video begins as Collins describes how it drives with the promise of showing off all the modes.

Once he leaves the city and takes to more twisty, turning roads, the switch is flipped to Sport. This changes AWD, steering, engine, and exhaust settings over to Sport. Everything firms up and becomes more precise giving the driver a better connection with the car and the road.

That’s it for public roads as Collins takes the Ford Focus RS out on the track to try out Track mode. This adds dampers and ESC to the Sport mode list and shows off how well the car can drive on a track. Sounds fun, but that’s not all folks.

The final setting on the Focus RS is Drift mode, which flips the dampers and steering settings back to Normal, but puts AWD into Drift. According to Collins, it’s completely effortless and he makes it look like a breeze as he drifts like a champ. He also lets out a cheer, which makes you wonder how big his smile was under that white helmet when he was the Stig.

The Focus RS is set to arrive in the US this spring with a price of $36,605 making it somewhat affordable. Power will come from a 2.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that puts out 350 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. It will also sprint from 0-62 mph in a reported 4.7 seconds.

Now you see why Collins was having such a good time.
