There’s a whole generation of kids who came to love cars because of the Cars movie franchise. The first installment debuted 10 years ago, which is why your lovable little tyke is now too old to care about the third movie. That doesn’t mean there won’t be a fair number of older kids, parents, and wee little ones going to see Cars 3, but they better be ready for a pretty dark movie.

It’s a kid’s movie and it’s animated, so you’re probably wondering how it can really be all that dark. Well, take a look at the just released US teaser trailer.

That doesn’t look like a happy way to start a movie. In fact, it looks for all the world like good old Lightning McQueen is about to get smeared across the pavement. Add the rather ominous “From This Moment Everything Will Change” text overlay and it feels more like a war movie than an animated movie about anthropomorphic cars.

Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez, with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage!

So it’s supposed to be a comeback movie, which means Lightning McQueen does get smeared across the pavement and spends the movie trying to get his parts back together and find a way to stay in the race. This better not be as sad as Toy Story 3 when they very nearly incinerated every single toy. I’m a grown-up and that nearly scarred me for life.

You can see Cars 3 when it opens in theaters on June 16, 2017, assuming you want to watch Lightning McQueen almost get killed and then eke out a recovery with a little help from his friends. I’m not thrilled about him coming close to getting killed, but I guess he’s faring better than Scar or Bambi’s mom so it can’t be all bad.

I got past them using the windshields as the eyeballs instead of the headlights, so I suppose I can get past them nearly killing Lightning McQueen. Ka-chow?
