Next year, women from around the world will have the chance to participate in a huge, all-women adventure during the ten-day Rebelle Rally. The competition will have women driving a challenging off-road course through California and Nevada without the aid of modern tech for navigation. What, you thought this was going to be easy?
There will be no phones, no GPS, not a single luxury. Like Robinson Crusoe, it’s primitive as can be. Wait, wrong story. This one doesn’t involve boats, islands, or coconut bikins, but stock cars and miles of desert to cover. There will be dirt roads, double tracks, open desert, and sand dunes with camping villages along the way to catch some sleep.
The competition won’t feature super tricked out race vehicles either, but rather two classes of street legal vehicles only. The 4×4 class is open to any 4-wheel drive vehicles that has a two-speed transfer case like the Jeep Wrangler, pickup trucks, and SUVs like Land Rovers. The crossover class is open to two-wheel or all-wheel vehicles with no low-range like the Subaru Forester or Toyota RAV4.
The whole thing kicks off October 13 in Lake Tahoe, California and wraps on October 22 in San Diego. There is no special qualifying required to enter the race and no professional driving skills are needed, although you must show that you have experience and take a free navigation course offered by the group once you’re registered.
The Rebelle Rally aims to be inclusive and make it possible for women to have the experience without a lifetime of professional driving. You just need the chops to cover the 2,000 kilometer route.
Each team will be made up of two women with a registration fee of $5,000 per person so the Rebelle Rally won’t come cheap. Add on to that the cost of the vehicle, insurance, fuel, and equipment and it’s quite an investment. Still, for those with the right skills, this will be an amazing adventure and well worth the price of entry.
Whoever secures first place in their class will get a trophy, bragging rights for life, and a $5,000 credit toward next year’s race for each member of the team. If you think you have what it takes to compete in the Rebelle Rally, then you can head over to their website and register beginning on December 15th. Start lining up those sponsors now and get ready!
