Everyone knows about Shark Week, but have you heard of Car Week? It’s this week’s theme on History Channel and it’s packed with all things automotive. We skimmed through the assorted special offerings and came to a screeching stop at “Battle of the 80s Supercars with David Hasselhoff.”
As a child of the 80s, this is the kind of stuff that makes you take notice. Just what counts as an ’80s supercar? There were some pretty cool cars out there particularly the Ferraris driven by Tom Selleck as Magnum P.I. and Don Johnson as Sonny Crockett on Miami Vice. Nope, those aren’t the cars we see in the trailer. Instead, it goes a bit more on the camp side of things.
You should really know that already given the special is hosted by David “The Hoff” Hasselhoff who drove KITT on Knight Rider. Expect to see the Knight Industries Two Thousand 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am make an appearance. Wonder how he feels about today’s semi-autonomous cars showing him up?
Joining The Hoff will be Erik Estrada, who isn’t really known for driving a car. He played Officer Frank Poncherello (aka Ponch) on CHiPs and drove a police motorcycle. So, we have The Hoff and Ponch, but who else could they tap from 80s fandom?
The answer is Dirk Benedict, who played Face on The A-Team, because everyone needed a snappy nickname on 80s television shows. Again, not a guy who drove a car, but he did get to hang out in the snazzy black and red A-Team van, so that counts. We love it when a plan comes together.
The trailer makes it look like this is going to be a heck of a lot of fun. Rather than just showing clips of the show with a voiceover, they did it up like a training montage.
The show is set to run on Wednesday, July 10 at 8 pm ET and promises two hours of nostalgia-filled fun.
