Welcome to Part 2 of our rundown of compact crossovers. This time, we compare the upscale models, and there’s no shortage of them. There are some surprises, including – why do so many of them have such wide turning circles?

Those wide circles are likely partly due to the meatier wheels these models wear. Also, you’ll note that in comparison to the more mainstream models in Part 1, many of these fancier models have smaller cargo areas, a consequence of more expressive styling.

So let’s dig in. As before, they are listed by overall length, shortest first.

LAND ROVER EVOQUE

Base price range: $41,110 – 57,600
Overall length / cargo capacity: 171.5 inches / 19.4 cu. ft
Turns, lock to lock / turning diameter: 2.47 / 37.1 ft.

Comments: The Evoque’s boxy shape give a very short length with not the smallest cargo capacity. Quick steering and an agreeable turning diameter. Available in two or four doors.

AUDI Q3

Base price range: $32,500 – 38,500

Comments: Here comes Audi’s baby crossover, new for 2015. Overall length is tight, but turning circle is a wide, and the cargo area is small.

MERCEDES-BENZ GLA

BMW X1

Comments: Weird that the Germans are so close-lipped about the number of turns lock-to-lock on their cars. The X1 strikes a decent balance of overall length and cargo room, and the turning radius ain’t bad.

MERCEDES-BENZ GLK

Overall length / cargo capacity: 178.3 inches / 16.5 cu. ft
Turns, lock to lock / turning diameter: 2.6 / 37.7 ft.

Comments: The GLK turns in good numbers – short length, quick steering, sub-38-inch turning diameter – but cargo room is scant. Another German crossover means another diesel option.

LINCOLN MKC

Base price range: $33,100 – 39,965

Turns, lock to lock / turning diameter: 2.65 / 38.0 ft.

Comments: The upscale version of the Ford Escape, the MKC stays below 180 inches and posts decent cargo room. Steering is quick. The tailgate’s dip-down into the bumper means it may also be taking the brunt of punishment from those who park by feel.

INFINITI QX50

Base price range: $35,000 – 38,600
Overall length / cargo capacity: 182.3 inches / 18.6 cu. ft
Turns, lock to lock / turning diameter: 2.85 – 3.06 / 34.8 – 36.0 ft.

2015_Infiniti_QX50_04

Comments: The QX50 wins the turning-diameter derby with a sub-35-inch measurement. It sells in very small numbers, but for fans of Nissan’s M platform, there is no other choice.

LEXUS NX

Base price range: $TBA
Overall length / cargo capacity: 182.3 inches / 17.7 cu. ft
Turns, lock to lock / turning diameter: 2.68 / 39.8 ft.

2015_Lexus_NX_200t_002

Comments: Heckuva beak on this guy, and the NX’s relatively long length and small cargo area shows that most of the real estate was concentrated up front. Lexus answers the German diesels with an NX hybrid version.

AUDI Q5

Base price range: $43,775 – 58,475
Overall length / cargo capacity: 182.6 inches / 29.1 cu. ft
Turns, lock to lock / turning diameter: N/A / 38.1 ft.

Comments: The Q5 has a clear 10 inches in length over the Q3, while having about the same turning diameter. The extra length brings much more cargo room. Diesel is available, at a premium price.

VOLVO XC60

Comments: Turning diameter is on the wide side, and the XC60 is on the long side, but it has cargo space aplenty.

BMW X3

Comments: The X3 has less cargo room than the shorter X1. Wide turning radius, too. Model year 2015 brings a diesel option.

ACURA RDX

Comments: Essentially a coupe version of the BMW X3, the X4’s length-to-cargo area ratio takes a back seat to the styling. Turning radius remains wide, and BMW isn’t giving them away, but the X4 has an undeniably sporty look.

PORSCHE MACAN

Base price range: $55,755 – $77,985
Overall length / cargo capacity: 184.3 inches / 17.7 cu. ft
Turns, lock to lock / turning diameter: 2.68 / 38.7-39.2 ft.

Comments: The Macan shares its basic structure with the Audi Q5, though the Macan’s curvy body is longer and has much less cargo space. Wide turning diameters here, too. Four hundred horsepower with the Macan Turbo!
