With the 2014 North American Auto Show (NAIAS) set to kick-off in Detroit, Michigan tomorrow, major automakers and new car fans are “raring to go.” If your tastes run more toward the classic autos, then I have a word for you, as well: Go West young man — go west.

The Western cities of Phoenix and Scottsdale, Arizona have been invaded by over 300,000 classic, exotic, rare, and vintage car enthusiasts from around the globe for what promises to be a week that will go down in the annals of automobile history.

Six of the largest and most lucrative automobile auction firms in the world have converged in this week-long celebration of rare and expensive autos; spearheaded on January 12 by the most elegant of car shows, the Concours d’Elegance, Arizona.

Over 2,500 vintage and exotic automobiles (as well as a handful of boats and motorcycles) are expected to change hands to the tune of over $250 million. More than a half dozen single automobiles are expected to draw bids that exceed $1 million and several will reach as high as $10 million. Staging and preparation are already underway as registered vehicles have been documented and perspective buyers are going about the various authentication procedures.

Scottsdale, Arizona, USA

January 12 through 20

This Scottsdale based auction firm has become a household name by broadcasting major events on popular cable networks, but they have been instrumental in the growing popularity of classic cars for nearly a half-century. Two car-guys, who came together through an interest in the same Cadillac, became friends and began holding the Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction back in 1971; making this the 43rd annual Scottsdale Auction Event. It quickly developed a following and garnered international exposure. Barrett-Jackson has secured over 1-million square feet of display area (with indoor plumbing) in the WestWorld Center and plans to auction 1400 vehicles over the next week, with most of the bidding taking place in the final two-days of the event (January 18 &19). Sunday and Monday are purely for exhibition purposes giving connoisseurs an opportunity to get close (look but don’t touch) to these prized autos. Among the featured vehicles will be:

2008 Bugatti Veyron
Simon Cowell’s 2008 Bugatti Veyron 16.4

The 2008 Bugatti Veyron, owned by producer Simon Cowell. The Veyron was the fastest, street legal production vehicle sold in the US in 2008. It only has 1300 miles on the clock and boasts a 16-cylinder 8.0-liter engine that produces 1000-hp. (Proceeds will benefit the Make a Wish Foundation).

1967 L88 Chevrolet Corvette
1967 L88 Chevrolet Corvette

A rare 1967 L88 Chevrolet Corvette, with a 7.0-liter engine and M-22 “Rock-Crusher” transmission. Only twenty L88 Vettes were produced in ’67 and this one is the crown jewel. It is the only red-on-red version of a a 1967 L88 Corvette and the only one to have received the coveted NCRS Dontov Mark of Excellence Award. This car could draw the highest bid of the event.

1954 Chrysler Belmont Concept

A concept car shown in the 1954 Chicago Auto Show and New York Autorama, the 1954 Chrysler Belmont Convertible, will come across the stage on Saturday in Barrett-Jackson’s Salon-Class. It is expected to draw top bids.
The list of impressive cars seems endless, forty Shelby Mustangs, a Formula One Race Car, a Batmobile, and a COPO Camaro, included. Visit the Barrett-Jackson website for pictures and details.
In addition to Barrett-Jackson, there will also be five other auction firms holding events in and around Scottsdale during this epic week for classic automobile lovers.
