The Active Lifestyle Vehicle awards were announced last week in Phoenix, Arizona after an intense day-long competition. The event involved both on-road and off-road driving and assembled a unique panel of judges.
Rather than the usual assortment of automotive journalists, the Active Lifestyle Vehicle awards also brings in the people who live an active lifestyle. This includes both amateur athletes and professionals like former Arizona Cardinals football players.
It’s one thing for experts in all things cars to say which vehicles they think are best, but it’s something else entirely to have the people who use those vechicles voice their opinions. Everyone, regardless of their driving experience, had the opportunity to drive the same courses and see how each vehicle handled.
The on-road course was a beautiful drive loop with plenty of twists and turns while the off-road course took vehicles up steep hills and down rugged inclines. Jurors evaluated not only each vehicle’s handling, but its flexibility for an active lifestyle.
Even compact vehicles can do a handy job of managing things like bikes when the interiors are well-designed. With rear seats that fold completely flat for a nice even load floor and a front seat that reclines all the way back to increase room, the Honda Fit won the Best Urban category.
That doesn’t mean there’s not a place for larger vehicles. The 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan nabbed an award for Best Value On-Road proving you don’t have to spend a fortune to get a comfortable SUV with plenty of room for you family and your stuff.
Trucks also received recognition with the 2018 Ram Laramie Longhorn Southfork earning Best High Luxury Off-Road. There was a time when trucks were strictly about utility, but the Ram showed off a great combination of off-road chops and a luxurious interior befitting a high-end sedan.
