The winners of the 2019 North American Car, Truck, and Utility of the Year were announced today at this year’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit. One of the most coveted awards in the industry, the three vehicles selected came out on top after rigorous testing by the group’s jurors. Here are this year’s winners.
2019 North American Car of the Year: Genesis G70
Genesis is a brand many people haven’t even heard of, yet it was good enough to be the top pick. It’s the relatively new luxury brand from Hyundai and although it’s still somewhat unknown, it’s made a big impression with the experts.
The G70 is a full-size sedan with all the luxury, performance, and style one expects from a luxury brand. There’s a choice of either a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 252 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque or a 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged V6 with 365 horsepower and 376 lb-ft of torque.
There’s the option for rear-wheel or all-wheel drive with five available trims. Standard features on even the base model include 12-way power driver’s seat and 8-way power passenger seat, leatherette seating surfaces, and an 8-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Despite being a luxury sedan, the G70 comes in with pricing far below competitors. The base Genesis G70 is $34,900 while the top trim is priced at $52,250.
2019 North American Utility of the Year: Hyundai Kona
The Hyundai Kona is an all-new model that capitalizes on the current crossover craze. It’s a compact, affordable crossover with attractive styling. This is only the 5th time in 25 years that a single automaker has won two awards.
The Kona is available in four trims and offers a choice of either front-wheel or all-wheel drive. It comes with strong standard safety including forward collision avoidance, lane keeping assist, and driver attention warning.
It’s also quite affordable making it a good choice for those on a budget. Pricing ranges from $19,990 to $28,900.
2019 North American Truck of the Year: Ram 1500
The all-new Ram 1500 came out on top of the highly-competitive truck segment. It combines plenty of capability with rugged styling and one of the most comfortable rides you’ll find in a truck.
Engine choices include a mild hybrid 3.6-liter V6 with 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque, 5.7-liter V8 with 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque, and mild hybrid 5.7-liter V8 with 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque.
Pricing on the 2019 Ram 1500 runs from $34,795 to $44,190.
