For 2017, Porsche will introduce a fourth Macan, an entry-level model with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
What is it?
The Macan is Porsche’s entry into the popular small-crossover market. Up til now, there have been three Macans available for sale in the US, with the least-expensive version being the $54,500 Macan S. This new base Macan will be priced below the S at $47,500, which will open up the Macan to a wider array of buyers.
The Macan S has a 340-horsepower, twin-turbo V-6 that displaces 3.0 liters. The new base Macan has a 2.0-liter turbo four; it is sourced from the Volkswagen engine family and produces 252 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, which comes on at a low 1,600 rpm.
The new base Macan will get better mileage than the S; the EPA estimates 20 mpg city and 25 mpg highway, with an overall rating of 22 mpg. That easily beats the Macan S, which posts ratings of 17 mpg city /23 mpg highway and 19 mpg overall.
As with other Macans, the new base trim will use Porsche’s seven-speed PDK transmission. Porsche says that when equipped with the Sport Chrono package with Launch Control, the base Macan will hit 60 mph in 6.1 seconds.
Visually, the base Macan is distinguished by matte-black window moldings, black brake calipers and a unique stainless-steel dual exhaust.
What does Porsche say?
“Following the introduction of the Macan S, Macan Turbo, and most recently the Macan GTS models, the four-cylinder turbocharged engine in this model is tailored for use in the sports car of the SUV segment.”
