2016 New York Auto Show: 2017 Toyota Prius Prime

Posted by

Toyota’s quest to be your go-to hybrid maker rolls on with the 2017 Prius Prime plug-in hybrid.

What is it?

The Prius Prime is Toyota’s answer to the Chevy Volt, another five-door hatchback with a pure electric range and a means to plug it in.

The Volt has some advantages over the Prius Prime; its electric-only range is 53 miles, versus 22 for the Prius Prime. And the Prius Prime can only do 84 mph in electric mode, while the Volt can go 100 mph.

On the other hand, Toyota is claiming an EPA mileage rating of 120+ MPGe, while the Volt checks in at 106 MPGe. This allows Toyota to call the Prius Prime the most efficient plug-in hybrid in the world.

Inside, the Prius Prime can be had with a dazzling, 11.6-inch HD center screen.

What Toyota says:

Bill Fay, Group Vice President and General Manager – Toyota Division, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc:

“Say hello to the most technologically advanced hybrid in the world…the Prius Prime. We gave it the name Prime, because it represents the best hybrid MPG, the best driving range (600+ miles) and the best MPGe (120+ miles) of any plug-in in the world.”

What’s new:

  • Plug-in hybrid powertrain is more efficient and has a longer range than the last generation
  • New 11.6-inch HD infotainment screen
  • Quad LED headlights
  • Carbon fiber rear hatch
  • Color head-up display

When does it go on sale?
