Toyota’s quest to be your go-to hybrid maker rolls on with the 2017 Prius Prime plug-in hybrid.
What is it?
The Prius Prime is Toyota’s answer to the Chevy Volt, another five-door hatchback with a pure electric range and a means to plug it in.
The Volt has some advantages over the Prius Prime; its electric-only range is 53 miles, versus 22 for the Prius Prime. And the Prius Prime can only do 84 mph in electric mode, while the Volt can go 100 mph.
On the other hand, Toyota is claiming an EPA mileage rating of 120+ MPGe, while the Volt checks in at 106 MPGe. This allows Toyota to call the Prius Prime the most efficient plug-in hybrid in the world.
