2014 NAIAS Detroit Auto Show: Less Than a Month and Counting
Ultra-popular concept vehicles are the order of the day, as we begin our countdown to the 2014 NAIAS Detroit Auto Show, which opens on January 13 and will run through January 26. In addition to over fifty worldwide debut production vehicles, there are expected to be a record setting number of innovative concept vehicles on display. Nearly every continent will be represented as global carmakers step-up to present their cutting-edge wares to the automotive media and consumers, alike. Some of these Concept vehicles are second edition versions and some are brand new. Some you will see vaguely portrayed as production vehicles and others will never be seen again. Only the best ideas and most stunning designs will gain the favor of the automotive community and go on to be unveiled as production models in future North American International Auto Shows.
This is one of the fastest growing European automakers in the world, and the quality of the vehicles which are being produced by Audi is on par with the best. Audi will present their Q1 Crossover SUV, which will feature Quattro all-wheel drive and patented e-tron hybrid technology. Custom designed nineteen-inch wheels, a wide stance, and higher than average ground clearance give the Q1 a cat-like appearance, and the interior (in typical Audi fashion) will be immaculate.
Korean automakers aren’t widely recognized for their performance sports cars, but Kia is looking to change that. They will unveil a 2+2 concept, which normally indicates a small sports car with “barely-there” rear seating. According to sources at Kia Motors, the unnamed sports car is designed to turn heads and provide driving enjoyment on the street and on the track. If we are to take into account the Kia GT concept, which debuted in 2011, we should see something special from Kia in the Motor City.
Get ready for a wider, longer, more powerful John Cooper Works MINI Hatchback Concept. Taking its name from racing car maker John Cooper, who designed the very first Mini Cooper, this hot little hatchback is easy on the eyes and expected to be loads of fun to drive. MINI has been very secretive about the powerplant for this concept but a beefed up version of the turbocharged 2.0-liter (found in the 2014 MINI S) would be the logical choice. The JCW Concept version features a “Bright Highway Metallic” exterior with all of the usual striping and accents.
The rumor mill has been working overtime for this concept. The return of the beloved Toyota Supra could be closer than you think. The Japanese automaker has confirmed that they will unveil a high-performance concept sports car in Detroit. Speculation is that it will be the Supra Concept; powered by a 400+horsepower hybrid setup. If these rumors are true, then this could very well be the show stopper for Detroit in 2014. We will know for sure in less than a month.
Out with the shoe-box and in with the “show-boat”; the Volvo XC Coupe Concept could help the Swiss automaker close the gap between themselves and the Germans. It represents a stylistic departure from the frumpy old Volvos of the past, with bold lines, a wide aggressive stance, and a sleek appearance. Look for Volvo to make waves with this great looking new crossover coupe.
