Excellent highway manners; comfortable ride; impressive safety features; V8 power; stylish interior and exterior
For 2011, the Volvo XC90 is available in trim levels including the 3.2, 3.2 R-Design and V8.
The 3.2 and 3.2 R-Design are powered by a 235-horsepower 3.2L inline-6, which is mated to a 6-speed Geartronic automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard on the 3.2, while all-wheel drive with Instant Traction is optional. The V8 comes with Volvo's 311-horsepower 4.4L V8, which puts out 325 ft-lb of torque at 5,850 rpm. All-wheel drive with Instant Traction is standard on the V8, as is the 6-speed Geartronic automatic transmission found in the 3.2.
All trim levels share dozens of standard features, including front and rear reading lights, tilt/telescoping steering wheel with cruise and audio controls, one-touch power windows front and rear, a power moonroof, a 70/30 split tailgate, heated power mirrors, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, power driver's seat with memory, a flat-folding 40/20/40 second row seat and a similar third-row seat. All XC90 models also come equipped for Sirius satellite radio.
The V8 adds speed-sensitive steering, 8-way power adjustable passenger seat, leather upholstery, wood inlays, heated front seats, headlamp washers and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The 3.2 R-Design adds sport-tuned suspension and steering, larger alloy wheel options, performance tires and unique styling and trim, including R-Design-specific leather seats and steering wheel, brushed stainless sill moldings and silk-matte-finish accents.
Several packages are available throughout the lineup, which add both comfort and convenience to any 2011 Volvo XC90. For the 3.2, a Multimedia Package adds a Dynaudio sound system and navigation, while a Climate Package includes luxuries such as heated front seats, headlamp washers and rain-sensing windshield wipers. On the 3.2 R-Design, a Dynamic Package adds special 20-inch alloys and dual Xenon headlights with active bending.
The V8 can be ordered with an Executive Package that includes premium wheels, extra soft leather, ventilated front seats with massage and deluxe interior appointments. The Multimedia Package includes items from the 3.2, but also dual Xenon headlights with automatically pivoting lenses. Volvo's Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) is a standalone option on all XC90s.
Volvo has loaded the XC90 with plenty of standard safety features including daytime running lights, anti-lock brakes with electronic assistance, stability, traction and anti-skid control, as well as a reinforced cabin full of air bags both front and rear.
For 2011, the Volvo XC90 sees no significant changes.
The Volvo XC90 occupies a spot in a competitive luxury SUV class that includes the Acura MDX, BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz M-Class. Amid the segment, the XC90 offers loads of standard comfort and safety features. Both 6-cylinder and V8 models are priced lower than most of the competition and the 10-year/100,000-mile rust warranty is impressive.
