Smooth ride and handling; all-wheel-drive versatility; cargo room; excellent turbocharged power in T6; ample standard safety features
Volvo discontinued the V70 wagon in 2011, leaving the XC70 as the remaining full-size wagon from the automaker. Two distinct XC70 models are offered: The 3.2 comes powered by a 3.2L inline-6, which produces 240 horsepower, while the top-of-the-line T6 utilizes a 3.0L turbocharged inline-6 that delivers 300 horsepower and 325 ft-lb of torque. Available from dealers on the T6 is Polestar Performance tuning, a $1,495 package that increases output to 325 horsepower and torque to 354 ft-lb, without impacting EPA fuel economy ratings of 17/24 mpg.
A 6-speed "Geartronic" automatic transmission with manual mode is standard in both models, and in the T6 its software is programmed for faster shifts and improved acceleration. XC70 3.2 wagons come in both all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive, while the T6 is AWD only. The 3.2 can be ordered one of four trim levels -- base, Premier, Premier Plus and Platinum -- while the T6 comes in base, Premier Plus or Platinum.
Inside, attractive materials and excellent ergonomics abound, including Volvo's smart "floating" instrument panel and ultra-slim upright console. Standard features on all XC70s include a 40/20/40 split folding rear seat, power windows, locks and mirrors, adjustable steering wheel with integrated audio and cruise control and heated mirrors. Volvo's Sensus infotainment system allows driver and passenger to control the car's climate and stereo system through a 5-inch touchscreen monitor. An upgraded 7-inch screen is available, which can display navigation, DVD compatibility and a back-up camera.
Other standard features include dual-zone climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, SIRIUS satellite radio, auxiliary audio jack and a USB/iPod audio interface. The T6 AWD adds a power moonroof, leather seating and woodgrain interior trim.
3.2 Premier trim adds the power moonroof, walnut inlays and adaptive digital gauges, with three different ambient settings including "Elegance," "Eco" and "Performance." Premier Plus adds a power tailgate, park assist rear camera, and a folding front passenger seat. With the Platinum trim, navigation and a premium audio system are included.
Options include active dual xenon headlights with integrated washers, a blind spot information system, and a Climate Package with heated windshield, heated front and rear seats, and a heated steering wheel. A Technology Package adds adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, collision warning, and pedestrian detection with full automatic braking.
Standard safety items on all XC70s include traction control and anti-skid, a tire pressure monitor, electronic stability control, 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist, a cabin full of airbags and a whiplash protection system.
For 2014, Volvo has made a host of small but important changes to the XC70. For starters, the front end is updated with a new grille and headlight designs and a restyled lower intake, while both front and rear bumpers are also redesigned. LED daytime running lights debut as well. In the XC70 3.2, a new analog instrument cluster is standard, while the T6 AWD receives a new adaptive digital cluster. A quick-fold front passenger seat and rear park assist camera are available in the 3.2, and the T6 features revised shift management software in its 6-speed "Geartronic" automatic for quicker changes and improved acceleration.
Volvo has always set the bar high when it comes to safety, and the XC70 exemplifies that. With either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive available, buyers are able to choose the wagon that best suits their needs. Healthy output from both available engines adds performance appeal to the XC70, and with a smooth ride, plenty of cargo capacity, and competitive pricing, the Volvo XC70 makes a strong case for itself against rival wagons from BMW, Audi and Mercedes.
