Greater ground clearance; luxury appointments; all-wheel drive; safety features
The 2015 Volvo Cross Country is based on the automaker's V60 wagon. Powered by the same 2.5L 5-cylinder turbo engine and 6-speed automatic transmission, the Cross Country adds over two more inches of ground clearance and exterior cladding. The V60 Cross Country is only available with all-wheel drive. The extra ground clearance and full-time all-wheel drive mean the V60 Cross Country is aimed at the outdoors enthusiast who might need to traverse a muddy logging road once in a while.
Starting at $38,540, the base V60 Cross Country offers a high-end feature set and luxury appointments that include 18-inch alloy wheels, a power sunroof, rain-sensing wipers, rear fog lamps, sport leather seats, remote keyless entry and dual-zone climate control. The base's audio system includes Volvo's "Sensus Connect," an in-car connectivity and infotainment system that can integrate with a smartphone app as well as provide in-car Wi-Fi and navigation.
Options are substantial. The Climate Package adds a heated steering wheel, heated front seats and heated windshield washers. The Convenience Package adds a rear camera, keyless drive and a Homelink universal garage door opener. The Technology Package offers adaptive cruise control, collision warning with full automatic braking and a lane-departure warning that will also read road signs and automatically control the high-beams.
The Platinum trim starts at $3,431 above the base trim. It adds HID automatic headlamps, proximity entry, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and a rearview camera as standard.
The audio system is upgradeable with a Harmon/Kardon stereo that includes HD radio and iPhone/iPod connectivity.
The Volvo V60 Cross Country is a brand-new model for 2015. Based on the automaker's V60 wagon, it adds crossover features like all-wheel drive and a raised suspension to sell it to the outdoors explorer.
The Subaru Outback, the Audi Allroad and the BMW X3 compete most closely to the V60 Cross Country. The Subaru lacks the Volvo's luxury feel and the Audi and BMW don't have Volvo's safety pedigree and particular Swedish styling.
