Lots of cargo space; competitive pricing; standard equipment; quality interior materials; excellent fuel economy from TDI model
Volkswagen Jetta SportWagens are offered in S, SE and TDI models for 2011. The S and SE come powered by a 170-horsepower, 2.5-liter 5-cylinder engine, matched with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or with a 6-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic and sport mode. SportWagen TDI models employ a 2.0-liter direct-injected turbodiesel that produces 140 hp and 236 lb-feet of torque. It is mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission. The EPA rates the Jetta TDI at 30 mpg city and 41 mpg highway.
The SportWagen is aptly named-- engineered to handle well, and also designed to carry a good amount of stuff. With the rear seat up, you'll find 32.8 cubic feet of space. Folded flat, the rear cargo space expands to 67 cubic feet. An optional fold-flat front passenger seat provides additional cargo space, while an optional panoramic sunroof lets in a substantial amount of ambient light.
Safety is paramount in the Jetta SportWagen, with head and thorax side airbags standard, as are full-length side-curtain bags. Side thorax bags for rear occupants are optional. Also standard are traction control and anti-lock brakes with brake assist and traction control.
All SportWagens come with air conditioning, cruise control, a CD sound system, 8-way adjustable front seats, power windows and locks, Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, heated power mirrors and tilt/telescopic steering standard. The SE adds a leather steering wheel and shifter, 10-speaker stereo with 6-disc CD changer and satellite radio, a 60/40 split folding rear seat, and alloy wheels. TDI models are outfitted as a mix between S and SE trims.
Popular options and packages include a navigation system and panoramic power sunroof, both of which also come grouped in the Premium Package. Bodyside moldings, ground effects kits, and premium alloy wheels are also available.
Despite an all-new Jetta sedan for 2011, Volkswagen's handy Jetta SportWagen carries over relatively unchanged.
The Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen offers a real alternative not just to the small wagons and even crossovers of the world, but in the TDI model, you'll find a true efficiency competitor with cars like the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight. SportWagens come with loads of standard equipment for a reasonable entry price, and they're hard to beat in the realm of safety features as well.
