Low entry price; excellent safety performance; SportWagen's cargo space, TDI's impressive fuel efficiency.
The Volkswagen Jetta sedan comes in five different trim levels for 2010: S, SE, SEL Wolfsburg and TDI. The S and SE and SEL are powered by a 170-horsepower, 2.5L 5-cylinder engine, matched with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or with a 6-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic and sport mode. The SportWagen loses the SEL package for 2010, but can still be had in S, SE and TDI versions.
The Wolfsburg is a special edition that gets its power from a 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine making 200 horsepower and 207 ft-lb of torque. It features special badging, premium wheels and a sport-tuned suspension and can be equipped with either a 6-speed manual or the 6-speed automatic transmission.
Jetta TDIs are available in both the sedan and the wagon. A 2.0L direct-injected turbodiesel produces 140 hp and 236 ft-lb of torque and can be mated to either the 6-speed manual or the 6-speed automatic transmissions. The EPA rates the Jetta TDI at 30 mpg city and 41 mpg highway.
The SportWagen boasts a surprising amount of cargo space. With the back seat up, there's 32.8 cubic feet of space, but with it folded forward the cargo area expands to nearly 67 cubic feet. An optional fold-flat front passenger seat provides additional cargo space and an optional panoramic sunroof adds a substantial amount of ambient light.
On both the Jetta sedans and SportWagens, front thorax-protecting side airbags are standard, along with full-length side-curtain bags. Side thorax bags for rear occupants are optional. All Jettas also include anti-lock brakes with engine braking assist and an electronic differential lock for improved traction. Volkswagen's electronic stabilization program (ESP) is now standard across the line.
A Jetta TDI Cup Street Edition will be available late in the model year and will feature unique exterior styling and interior trim, sport seats and 18-inch wheels.
All Jettas come with air conditioning, cruise control, a CD sound system, 8-way adjustable front seats, power windows and heated mirrors and tilt/telescopic steering standard. The SE adds a leather steering wheel and shifter, power sunroof, 10-speaker stereo with 6-disc CD changer, a 60/40 split folding rear seat and alloy wheels. The SEL adds 17-inch wheels, body-colored valences and a special instrument cluster. TDI models are outfitted as a mix between S, SE and SEL trims.
Popular options include a navigation system and various sport styling kits that give the Jetta a high-performance look.
The 2010 Volkswagen Jetta comes well-equipped and value-priced for those who want a small but roomy sedan or wagon. The Jetta line is also a safety standout, as one of only a few compact sedans and wagons at any price to offer available side-thorax air bags for rear-seat occupants. With the available SportWagen body style, the Jetta is an efficient alternative to sport-utility vehicles, and the TDI diesel offers the efficiency of a hybrid with the torque people expect from a small diesel.
For 2010, the Volkswagen Jetta sees a slight interior and exterior styling upgrade, and two models--the GLI and the SEL wagon--are discontinued. There is a new Wolfsburg Edition, which is available only as a sedan with a turbocharged 200-hp 2.0L 4-cylinder engine. The Jetta TDI Cup Street Edition will be a late addition to the 2010 model year line up and includes features such as unique interior and exterior styling, sport seats and 18-inch wheels.
