Model Highlights

Toyota Tacomas are well-regarded in the mid-size pickup segment, as evidenced by their traditionally strong resale values.

For 2009, all three of the typical pickup body styles are offered: regular cab, Access Cab (extended cab), and Double Cab (crew cab). All body types are available with a 6-foot composite bed, and the Double Cabs also offer a shorter 5-foot bed. Model offerings range from the workaday 4-cylinder 2-wheel-drive regular cab, starting at about 15,000, all the way up to the V6 4-wheel-drive Double Cab that can be optioned north of $32,000. Within that range, there's something for nearly everyone with an interest in this size pickup.

The 159-horsepower, 2.7L 4-cylinder versions are available with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission; regular cabs are only available with the 4-cylinder. The 236-horsepower 4.0L V6 is available with either a 6-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic transmission.

After its redesign in 2005, the Tacoma got substantially larger, moving firmly into mid-sized pick-up territory. For a truck of this size, an impressive 6,500 pounds can be towed behind a properly configured and equipped V6 drivetrain.

Toyota has created over 50 model and option choices that allow buyers to configure their truck with either an on-road or off-road personality to taste. The PreRunner versions add such add-ons as raised ride height, a front skid plate and mud and snow tires to create a 4-wheel-drive look on lower-cost 2-wheel drivetrain. PreRunner versions of all body types are available. The X-Runner goes in a completely different direction, adding a more rigid and lowered suspension, 18-inch wheels with low-profile tires, a hood scoop and other styling and performance enhancements as befit a street performance machine. The X-Runner is availably only in a 2-wheel-drive V6 Access Cab version with a 6-speed manual transmission.

The main option packages carry these themes further. The SR5 package adds many of the usual cosmetic and comfort improvements, including chrome exterior accents, upgraded seat fabric, a leather steering wheel, remote keyless entry, cruise control and more. Toyota Racing Development (TRD) packages are available in both Off-Road and Sport versions. The Off-Road package takes the SR5 package and adds sport seats, off-road suspension with Bilstein shock absorbers and progressive-rate front springs, 16-inch aluminum wheels, a locking rear differential, and skid plates. The Sport package is similar, but substitutes a sport-tuned suspension, 17-inch aluminum wheels and a limited-slip differential. Both TRD packages add a 115V/400W power outlet in the bed and fog lamps.

Standard safety features on all models are anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist, dual front passenger airbags, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), a limited-slip differential, active front headrests, and roll-sensing curtain and side seat airbags.

Model News

Toyota's popular Tacoma pickup sees several small changes but no major ones for 2009. All Tacomas get slightly revised grilles and taillights, new interior front door panels, as well as an upgraded stereo system, with an MP3/CD player and XM satellite radio capability.

Tacoma Access Cabs get standard power windows and locks, plus a new rear seat with center console and storage. Access and Double Cab Tacomas add an extra set of speakers as standard, and a backup camera is available.

Across the line, standard safety equipment now includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC). A standard limited-slip differential, active front headrests, and roll-sensing curtain and side seat airbags also bolster the Tacoma's safety.

New colors include Pyrite, Barcelona Red, Timberland and Magnetic Gray.

Value Writeup

Competition is tight in the mid-size pickup segment, and Toyota's 2009 Tacoma responds by offering impressive versatility, including the ability to configure a pickup with either on-road or off-road capability in mind. PreRunner versions add a tough 4x4 look and higher ride height to a 4x2 drivetrain, and the X-Runners pair a sport-tuned chassis with the 236-horsepower V6 engine.

Additionally, Toyota Racing Development (TRD) Off-Road and Sport packages are available on most V6 models to upgrade either trail or pavement performance.

Now with extra standard safety features like Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), a limited-slip differential, active front headrests and roll-sensing curtain and side seat airbags, there is even more to like about the 2009 Tacoma.

Summary
Toyota is recalling certain model year 2006-2008 RAV4, 2006-2010 Yaris, 2008-2010 Highlander, and 2009-2010 Tacoma, Corolla, Corolla Matrix and General Motors Pontiac Vibe vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the steering column assembly contains electrical connections to the driver's airbag module housed in a spiral cable assembly, which includes a Flexible Flat Cable (FFC). Due to the shape and location of the FFC's retainer, the FFC could become damaged when the steering wheel is turned.

Consequence
If the FFC is damaged, connectivity to the driver's air bag module could be lost and the air bag deactivated. The failure of the driver's air bag to deploy in the event of a crash that typically necessitates deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver.

Toyota will notify the Toyota vehicle owners, and General Motors will notify the Pontiac Vibe owners. Toyota will send their owners an interim notification letter in late April 2014 to advise owners of the recall, and will mail owners a second letter when remedy parts are available. General Motors has not yet provided a notification schedule for the Pontiac Vibe owners. When the parts are available, dealers will replace the spiral cable assembly, free of charge. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-762-2737.

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2005-2011 Toyota Tacoma Pre-Runner and 4x4 vehicles manufactured September 14, 2009, to October 11, 2010. In the affected vehicles, one of the leaf springs may fracture due to stress or corrosion. While being driven, the broken leaf could move out of position and contact surrounding components including the fuel tank, possibly puncturing the tank and causing a fuel leak.

Consequence
If the fuel tank leaks fuel from being punctured, there is an increased risk of a fire

The remedy for this recall is still under development. The recall is expected to begin November 28, 2014. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2008-2014 FJ Cruiser and Tacoma vehicles equipped with accessory wheels and tires installed by Toyota or dealers prior to the vehicle's first sale. The affected vehicles may list incorrect spare tire size and/or cold tire inflation information on the tire placard. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, "Tire Selection and Rims for Passenger Cars."

Consequence
If the spare tire is inflated to the incorrect pressure provided on the placard, tire failure may occur while it is being driven on, increasing the risk of a crash.

For the involved vehicles, overlay stickers to correct the tire placard will either be mailed to owners or provided to dealers for placement over the incorrect information on the placard. The recall is expected to begin in September 2014. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.

Toyota is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Tacoma Access Cab vehicles manufactured September 14, 2004, through March 29, 2010; and model year 2011 Tacoma Access Cab vehicles manufactured July 1, 2010, through September 7, 2011. If the access doors are repeatedly and forcefully closed, the screws that attach the seat belt pre-tensioner to the seat belt retractor can loosen over time. If the screws loosen completely, the seat belt pre-tensioner and the retractor spring cover could detach from the seat belt retractor.

Consequence
If the seat belt pre-tensioner detaches from the seat belt assembly, the seat belt pre-tensioner will not perform as designed, increasing the risk of injury in a severe crash.

Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the seat belt assemblies. Based on the inspection, the seat belt assembly will be replaced or new pre-tensioner screws will be installed with thread-locking sealant and a retractor spring cover with stopper ribs to prevent loosening of the screws. These services will be provided at no cost to the owner. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

Crash Test Note
Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags.

NHTSA Rollover Rating

Rollover Note
The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars).
