Model Highlights

Toyota's minivan, the Sienna, is available in an accommodating long wheelbase configuration for 2008, and is powered by a 3.5L V6, making 266 horsepower and 245 lb-ft of torque, mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. Buyers have a choice between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive in most Sienna models; front-wheel drive models get fuel economy ratings of 17 mpg city, 23 highway, which are high numbers for this vehicle segment. The Sienna also boasts a turning circle of only 36.8 feet--less than many other sedans and minivans.

Four different Sienna models are available--the base CE, LE, well-equipped XLE, and the very luxurious XLE Limited. The CE model includes keyless entry, a six-speaker CD sound system, front and rear air conditioning, and power windows, locks, and mirrors. The LE adds heated mirrors, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, cruise control, a six-disc changer, and other features, while the XLE adds tri-zone automatic climate control, power dual sliding doors, leather seats, a power driver's seat, fog lamps, and a garage-door opener. At the top of the range is the Limited, which brings a long list of additional features including a 360-watt, ten-speaker JBL Synthesis sound system, power-folding mirrors, front and rear parking sonar, Dynamic Laser Cruise Control, heated front seats, and 17-inch alloy wheels. The Sienna's interior has ten cup holders, four bottle holders, three 12-volt power outlets, and a folding tray table.

Front wheel drive models offer an eight-passenger configuration with a second-row bench seat, or a seven-passenger arrangement with second-row buckets. The seven-passenger setup is mandatory with all-wheel drive LE, XLE, and Limited models. All Siennas get a 60/40 "Split & Stow" third-row bench seat that stashes into the floor for a flat loading surface, and on Limited models a power-operated version is available. With the second row of seating removed, storage is ample.

Notable options include a navigation system with integrated Bluetooth hands-free system, rear sunshades, AC power outlets, and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system with wireless headphones and a nine-inch screen, larger than that on most other vans and SUVs.

All Siennas have many safety features standard, including anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), and brake assist. Front side air bags are standard, along with side curtain air bags that cover all three rows of seating. Stability control is optional across the line and standard on the Limited. All-wheel-drive models come with run-flat tires that can run at 55 mph for up to 100 miles.

Pros

Acceleration; fuel economy; interior appointments; available all-wheel drive; optional convenience features; maneuverability.

Model News

Toyota made virtually no changes to the class-leading Sienna minivan for 2008.

Value Writeup

With its powerful, yet efficient 3.5L V6, the 2008 Toyota Sienna has segment leading acceleration and passing power, while still returning fuel economy that's near the top of its class. The Sienna's interior is comfortable for most adults in all three rows. It also stands out as having an especially smooth ride and is among the best minivans for maneuverability. There are also several features, like Dynamic Laser Cruise Control and a Bluetooth interface, that aren't offered yet on most other minivans.

Summary
TOYOTA IS RECALLING 1,281 MODEL YEAR 2006 THROUGH 2009 SIENNA, 2004 LAND CRUISER, AND 2009 LEXUS GX PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE VEHICLE CAPACITY WEIGHT ON THE TIRE AND LOADING INFORMATION LABEL AND THE GVWR ON THE CERTIFICATION LABEL IS INSUFFICIENT FOR CERTAIN VEHICLES. SOME VEHICLES WERE ACCESSORIZED THROUGH VEHICLE PROCESSING CENTERS AND HAD ACCESSORIES INSTALLED THAT CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO EXCEED THE GVWR VALUE. THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO 110, "TIRE SELECTION AND RIMS," AND 49 CFR PART 567.

Consequence
INCORRECT LOAD CARRYING CAPACITY MODIFICATION LABELS COULD RESULT IN THE VEHICLE BEING OVERLOADED, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

TOYOTA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS INSTRUCTING THEM TO RETURN THEIR VEHICLE TO A TOYOTA OR LEXUS DEALER FOR AN EXCHANGE OF THE CERTIFICATION LABEL AND THE TIRE AND LOADING INFORMATION LABEL, AN INSTALLATION OF THE LOAD CARRYING CAPACITY MODIFICATION LABEL, IF NECESSARY, AND A CORRECTION TO THE OWNER'S MANUAL. THIS REMEDY WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING JULY 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-888-270-9371.

OWNERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV.

Summary
TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 1998 THROUGH 2010 SIENNA PASSENGER VEHICLES MANUFACTURED BETWEEN AUGUST 7, 1997 AND JANUARY 4, 2010, CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN OR ORIGINALLY SOLD IN CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, KENTUCKY, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WASHINGTON DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, WEST VIRGINIA AND WISCONSIN. THE SUBJECT VEHICLES ARE EQUIPPED WITH THE SPARE TIRE STOWED UNDER THE VEHICLE. IF THE VEHICLE IS OPERATED IN THE COLD CLIMATE REGIONS OF THE UNITED STATES WHERE ROAD SALT IS FREQUENTLY USED, WATER SPLASHED BACKWARDS WITH HIGH CONCENTRATIONS OF ROAD SALT CAN REACH THE SPARE TIRE CARRIER AND CORRODE THE SPARE TIRE CARRIER ASSEMBLY CABLE.

Consequence
THE CABLE MAY BREAK DUE TO EXCESSIVE CORROSION AND THE SPARE TIRE MAY SEPARATE FROM THE VEHICLE, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A VEHICLE CRASH.

TOYOTA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS WITH AN INTERIM LETTER INITIALLY INSTRUCTING THEM TO BRING THEIR VEHICLE TO AUTHORIZED DEALERS TO INSPECT FOR CORROSION. A SECOND NOTICE WILL BE SENT WHEN THE PERMANENT REMEDY IS AVAILABLE. FOR MORE INFORMATION, PLEASE SEE TOYOTA'S AMENDED RECALL REPORT OF JULY 12, 2010. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING JULY 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.

Summary
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2004-2011 Sienna vehicles originally sold in, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. The affected vehicles have a spare tire carrier assembly mounted under the vehicle whose attachment cable may corrode due to high concentrations of road salt splashing onto the spare tire carrier.

Consequence
If the carrier cable is corroded due to road salt, the spare tire may separate from the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Toyota will send owners an interim notification to advise owners of the recall and dealers will remove the spare tire and relocate it to the luggage compartment, free of charge. Owners will be mailed a second letter when remedy parts are available and dealers will replace the spare tire carrier assembly with an improved one, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. NOTE: 2004-2010 Siennas subject to this recall were subject to recall campaign 10V-160 initiated in 2010. Crash Test Note
Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags.

NHTSA Rollover Rating

Rollover Note
The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars).
