Model Highlights

Toyota's 2008 FJ Cruiser is about as tough as it gets when it comes to serious off-road machinery. The FJ basically comes three ways, while the Trail Teams Special Edition can be ordered for those who need a little bit more. All trucks carry Toyota's staid 239-horsepower 4.0L V6 with the company's excellent variable valve timing. It puts out a hefty 278 lb-ft of torque.

The truck is available as a 4x2 with a five-speed automatic transmission and limited-slip differential, as a full-time 4x4 with a six-speed manual, or as a part-time 4x4 with the five-speed auto. Skid plates are fitted across the engine and front suspension, as well as the fuel tank. The 4x4 models add a skid plate to the transfer case.

Standard exterior features across all three versions include rear release hatch glass, 17-inch black steel wheels with mud- and snow-rated tires, and a full-size spare. Inside you'll find air conditioning, an AM/FM/CD stereo with MP3/WMA playback capability, power windows and locks, and rubberized floors for superior mud and water resistance.

The FJ has few true options, as most convenience features are available in one of several packages. However, 17-inch aluminum wheels, daytime running lights, running boards, and rear intuitive parking assist can be ordered as standalone.

Packages and accessories allow for total customization of the FJ Cruiser, though special options packages are only available on 4x4 models. Four separate packages can be combined in several ways. The Convenience Package includes remote keyless entry, cruise control, power mirrors, rear intuitive parking assist, back-up sonar, daytime running lights, and rear privacy glass with wiper.

Two Upgrade Packages add amenities like a six-disc in-dash CD changer, active traction control, and 115V/400W outlet. An All-Terrain Package provides 16-inch alloy wheels with BF Goodrich Rugged Trail tires, trail-tuned Bilstein shocks, Cyclone air pre-cleaner, a rear locking differential that works in conjunction with stability control, and a multi-function display showing angle of incline, compass, and temperature. Packages add $2,875 to $5,300 to the cost of an FJ.

Beyond these packages, owners can order all manner of accessories like a Toyota Racing Development (TRD) cat-back exhaust, XM satellite radio, heavy-duty roof rack, and more.

Standard safety features include stability control, traction control, and anti-lock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist. Driver and passenger dual-stage air bags are standard, as are front seat-mounted side air bags and side curtain bags front and rear. Daytime running lights and rear intuitive parking assist are optional on all models, while Active Traction Control is available only on 4x4 models.

The 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser earned the highest five-star ranking for from the NHTSA for driver safety in head-on collisions, as well as in front and rear side impact testing.

Model News

The 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser is little changed from the 2007 debut model. In the realm of safety, side air bags and side curtain air bags are now standard equipment. Gone is the TRD Special Edition, though much of its beefy equipment has been integrated into the new Trail Teams Special Edition, a truck limited to 3,200 units, which gets an exclusive Iceberg White paint job with black trim. Black Cherry Pearl exterior paint has been discontinued, though Brick Red and Sandstorm have been added. Pricing across the range climbed about $500.

Value Writeup

IntelliChoice rated the 2007 Toyota FJ "Excellent" for its predicted five-year cost of ownership, so the little-changed 2008 FJ should follow that trend. The FJ Cruiser evokes fond memories of a tough-as-nails truck, though now buyers get amenities that make it a bit more civilized. The combination of Toyota's bomb-proof 4.0L V6, rugged off-road capabilities with 9.6 inches of clearance, surprisingly good highway presence, comfortable interior, and competitive pricing make the FJ Cruiser a smart alternative to offerings from Jeep and Hummer.

Summary
Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2007-2013 FJ Cruiser vehicles manufactured January 25, 2006 through February 23, 2013 and equipped with a Toyota Auxiliary Driving Lamp Kits mounted to the front bumper. These lamp assemblies include 55 watt bulbs and due to this wattage and mounting angle, the combination of the upper beam headlamps plus the auxiliary lamps are too bright and exceed the maximum light output allowed for an upper beam headlamp. Therefore, these vehicles fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108, "Lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment."

Consequence
Light intensities above the maximum allowable limit could cause increased glare for oncoming traffic and increase the risk of a crash.

Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the 55 watt bulbs with 35 watt bulbs, free of charge. The recall began on June 6, 2013. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Summary
Toyota is recalling certain model year 2007 through 2013 FJ Cruiser passenger vehicles. The retractors for the front driver and passenger seat belts are mounted in the access door (rear door) panels of the vehicle. Due to insufficient strength of the access door panel, cracks may develop in the panel if the access door is repeatedly and forcefully closed over an extended period of time.

Consequence
If cracks occur in the panel around the lower retractor anchor, the seat belt retractor could become detached, which could increase the risk of injury to an occupant in the event of a crash.

The safety recall began on June 6, 2013. Toyota will mail an interim letter to owners late in April 2013. Remedy notifications to the owners for the repair will begin in late May 2013. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Summary
Toyota is recalling certain Toyota Racing Development (TRD) brake kits, P/N PTR09-35070, and TRD High-Performance brake kits, P/N PTR09-35100, installed by Toyota vehicle processing centers and sold by Toyota dealers as an optional accessory for model year 2007 through 2012 Toyota FJ Cruiser vehicles. The subject TRD brake kit is specifically designed for the front wheels of 2007-2012 model year FJ Cruiser vehicles. Due to the shape of the outer brake tube of the brake kit, the clearance between the outer brake tube and a TRD 16 inch 6-spoke alloy wheel is minimal. If wheel balance weights are installed in an incorrect location, there is a possibility that the outer brake tube could be damaged due to interference with the balance weight, and brake fluid could leak from the damaged tube.

Consequence
If a brake tube becomes damaged and leaks fluid, it may result in increased stopping distances, and in some cases, loss of vehicle front braking performance, which could increase the risk of a crash.

All known owners of 2007-2012 model year FJ Cruiser vehicles will be notified by first class mail. If the vehicle is equipped with one of the TRD brake kits, the brake caliper outer brake tube will be replaced with a newly designed one at no charge. During this service, if necessary, the dealer will make wheel balance adjustments. This remedy will be performed even if the vehicle has original equipment 16 inch or 17 inch wheels or TRD 16 inch Beadlock ring type wheels, which are not affected by the condition, to assure sufficient clearance in the event wheels are changed at a later time. Notification to owners will begin in mid-November 2012. Owners may contact Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Crash Test Note
Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags.

NHTSA Rollover Rating

Rollover Note
The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars).
