Off-road capability; low entry price; powerful engine selection; warranty
The Equator is Suzuki's first foray into the compact pickup truck market. Available in both extended cab and crew-cab models, as well as both 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive configurations, Suzuki has a trim/drivetrain combination for almost any pickup buyer.
The base engine is a 2.5L 4-cylinder, which develops 152 hp and 171 lb-feet of torque. It's mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.
The base trim is fairly utilitarian, but still includes as standard equipment: anti-lock disc brakes, a full-size spare tire and a tire pressure monitor. With a starting price just over $17,000, it's an excellent value for those seeking a basic work truck.
Most will opt for the Comfort trim, however. At only $1,200 more, it comes with more commonly found amenities, such as air conditioning and a CD player. To get an automatic transmission though, requires the Premium trim, which also adds power mirrors, power door locks and windows as well as remote keyless entry.
The V6, standard on the Sport and RMZ-4 trims, is a 4.0L powerplant that makes 261 hp and 281 lb-feet of torque. It's available with only one transmission, a 5-speed automatic. The Sport trim includes 17" alloy wheels, power mirrors, power windows and locks, remote keyless entry and an AM/FM/CD stereo with six speakers.
The Crew cab model, which adds separate rear doors for second-row passengers, is only available with the V6 engine and automatic transmission. The rear seat is a 60/40-split affair, and features a flip-up seat with cubbies underneath for storage.
The RMZ-4 trim is top of the line, adding true off-road features such as an electronic locking rear differential, skid plates to protect the oil pan, transfer case and fuel tank and Bilstein off-road shocks all around. The RMZ-4 also features 9 inches of ground clearance and beefy BFGoodrich Rugged Trail tires as well. Leather-wrapped steering wheel and traction control are also standard.
The Equator comes with a full complement of air bags, including side curtain and side-impact airbags.
