Value Writeup

The Subaru Tribeca is a car-based crossover vehicle, meaning that it's going to ride and handle better on the road than utility vehicles that emphasize off-roading. While it's at the small end of mid-size, the Tribeca manages three rows of seating, to fit up to seven, so it's a good choice if you have to occasionally haul several kids in back. Also, safety is a good reason to consider the Tribeca; its all-wheel-drive system can prove an asset on slick roads and it's been a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Pros

All-weather performance; good balance between ride and handling; 7-passenger capability; versatility

Model News

Subaru has left the Tribeca mostly unchanged for 2013. However this year Subaru has cut the Premium and Touring models leaving only the Limited trim level.

Model Highlights

The Tribeca is only offered in Limited trim for 2013. Accordingly, only one powertrain is available, a 256 horsepower 3.6L horizontally opposed "boxer" 6-cylinder engine mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission. With this combination the Subaru Tribeca is able to net 16 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway and unlike many other advanced 6-cylinder engines, the boxer in the Tribeca uses regular fuel, rather than premium.

All-wheel drive is standard on the Tribeca; the Variable Torque Distribution system works with the electronic stability control and traction control to provide continuous traction to the wheels that can use it. During normal driving, the system sends 55 percent of torque to the rear wheels to aid handling no matter what the road conditions. Anti-lock brakes are also included. Towing is quite respectable on the Tribeca, with a 3,500-pound rating.

Thanks to the relatively low center of mass and a suspension that's tuned more for road performance than off-road capability, the Tribeca handles quite well while still offering an absorbent ride.

The Tribeca has three rows of seating to accommodate up to seven. First and second rows are quite comfortable, while the front seats afford a better view outward than most other crossovers. The second-row bench is split and slides forward or back to help optimize the balance of legroom with the third row; the third row is also split and folds flat to expand the cargo area when not in use.

The Limited Tribeca gets leather upholstery, a power memory driver's seat, ambient lighting, Bluetooth hands-free and a 385-watt harman/kardon audio system with satellite radio.

Safety features on the Tribeca include anti-lock brakes, traction control, stability control, dual stage front airbags, side and side curtain airbags and a 5-star rating in NHTSA crash tests.

Summary
Subaru of America is recalling certain model year 2014 Legacy 3.6R and Outback 3.6R and 2013 Tribeca vehicles manufactured June 12, 2013, through June 28, 2013 and equipped with 5-speed automatic transmissions. In the affected vehicles, the parking rod may come loose inside the automatic transmission.

Consequence
As a result of the parking rod detaching, the transmission may not be able to be moved from the "park" position preventing the vehicle from being moved or driven. Furthermore, even with the transmission shifted into the 'park' position, the parking mechanism may not engage, and the vehicle may roll away while in the "park" position, increasing the risk of a crash.

Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will replace the transmission, free of charge. The recall began on August 13, 2013. Owners may contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783. Subaru's recall number is WQJ-46.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or go to www.safercar.gov.

Summary
Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2006-2014 Tribeca vehicles manufactured November 16, 2004, to January 27, 2014. Due to a possible malfunction of the hood safety system and hood lock system, the hood may open unexpectedly while driving.

Consequence
If the hood unexpectedly opens while driving, it may interfere with the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.

Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will complete this recall in two phases. Phase one will involve inspection, cleaning, and lubricating the hood safety and hood lock systems. If after this is performed the hood latch does not operate properly, it will be replaced with a new current style part. Phase two will involve installing an improved hood safety system and hood lock system. Interim notification was mailed March 4, 2016. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-800-782-2783. Subaru's number for this recall is WQX-59 (phase one) and WQY-60 (phase two).

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Rollover Rating Dynamic Test Result
No Tip

Rollover Note
Dynamic (moving) test results (Tip or No Tip) and measured rollover-related properties determine vehicle's risk of rollover in single vehicle crash and its rollover rating. The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is.
