Model Highlights

Subaru's 2009 Impreza comes in several trim levels. The base 2.5i, the new 2.5GT and the sporty WRX come either as a four-door sedan or a five-door hatchback, while the Outback Sport and the STi models are hatchback-only. The sedan is about six inches longer than the hatchback, and the trunk is large enough to hold three golf bags. On both body styles, the rear seats can be folded forward for more cargo capacity; on hatchbacks they fold forward for a flat-loading floor.

All Imprezas are powered by a 2.5L horizontally opposed 4-cylinder. The base Impreza 2.5i produces 170 horsepower and can be mated to either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. The new, automatic transmission-only 2.5GT is powered by last year's 224 hp turbocharged engine, while the new 2009 WRX turbo delivers 265 hp and comes only with the 5-speed manual. The high-performance STi puts out 305 hp through its 6-speed manual transmission.

All Impreza and WRX models feature all-wheel drive, and those equipped with a manual transmission include hill-hold assist.

The boxer engine sits low and the overall design and placement help provide a low center of mass for secure handling. In addition to keeping the Impreza and WRX planted, the double-wishbone rear suspension helps improve interior space and reduces road noise.

WRX hatchbacks are distinguished visually by an under-body diffuser and single chrome exhaust pipe, while sedans have a dual-chrome-tipped exhaust and trunk spoiler. The STi includes distinctive, bulged fenders front and rear, as well as special 18-inch alloy wheels and tires, rally-inspired suspension, a throatier exhaust and Brembo disc brakes.

The Outback Sport model features a raised suspension, body-side cladding, unique upholstery with heated front seats, and other additional equipment oriented toward those who plan to take the rough road. The new 2.5GT comes standard with the amenities of the Premium Package and comes only with an automatic transmission

Inside the Impreza, there's a twin-cockpit design with a brushed-aluminum look throughout, with an available navigation/info screen as the centerpiece. The available navigation system also has inputs for gaming consoles.

Two major option packages are available. A Premium Package includes a power moonroof, alloy wheels, brake assist, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise control functions and an upgraded audio system with 6-disc CD changer. The Sat/Nav Package adds fog lamps, body-color foldable power mirrors, plus SIRIUS satellite radio and a touch-screen navigation system.

Standard safety features for all Imprezas include dual front and side-curtain airbags, four-channel, four-sensor anti-lock brakes and traction and stability control.

Model News

Following a complete redesign in 2008, the 2009 Subaru Impreza rolls on with a few important changes.

A new model, the 2.5GT, features the 224-hp turbocharged four from last year's WRX, but with a softer suspension and equipped only as an automatic.

The WRX itself benefits from the most updates. Power is boosted significantly, up to 265 hp and 244 ft-lb of torque. Also, both wagon and sedan now come with a revised exterior that includes a new grille, side bodywork and different spoilers. The interior gets new upholstery with contrasting red stitching, an aluminum footrest for the driver and electroluminescent gauges.

Also, a power moonroof is now included with the Premium Package.

Value Writeup

The 2009 Subaru Impreza continues to stand out from the rest of the small-car crowd because it offers road-oriented all-wheel drive across the line, while the interior is more sophisticated and the ride is smoother. The WRX still ranks as one of the best performance bargains on the market, and the 305-hp STi is a giant killer that still offers plenty of room for the family.

Summary
Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2003-2004 Legacy, Outback, 2009-2011 Legacy, Outback, Forester, 2006-2011 Impreza, Tribeca, 2003-2006 Baja, and 2006 Saab 9-2x vehicles originally sold or that have ever been registered in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands, or "Zone A." These vehicles may be equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front air bags, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.

Consequence
An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Subaru will notify their owners. General Motors will notify Saab owners. Dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. A notification schedule has not yet been provided. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-856-488-8500. Saab owners may contact GM at 1-800-955-9007. Summary
Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Outback and Legacy, 2008-2011 Impreza and 2008-2014 Impreza WRX/STI, and 2009-2013 Forester vehicles, currently, or formerly, registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. Salt water could splash on the brake lines through a gap in the fuel tank protector, resulting in excessive corrosion of the brake lines. Note that affected vehicles not currently, or formerly registered, in the salt belt states identified above are eligible for repair, at no cost to the customer, upon request.

Consequence
Brake line corrosion may result in brake fluid leakage. Fluid leakage may result in longer distances being required to slow or stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will test the brake system by depressing the brake pedal and inspecting for brake fluid leaks. If no brake fluid seepage is observed, the affected areas will be rustproofed with anti-corrosion wax. If brake fluid seepage is observed, the brake lines will be replaced followed by rustproofing with anti-corrosion wax. These services will be performed free of charge. The recall began July 2014 and second notifications will run through November 2014. Owners may contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783. Subaru's recall campaign number is WQK-47. Note: This recall supersedes recall 13V-110 which applied to certain 2005-2009 Legacy/Outback vehicles. Vehicles that were remedied under the previous campaign still need additional areas rust-proofed.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
