A body style for everyone: sedan, wagon, convertible; high performance from the Aero versions; all-wheel drive available on all models
The Saab 9-3 comes in three body styles: Sport sedan, SportCombi (wagon), and convertible. All three are available in base trim, with an inline 4-cylinder 2.0L turbo engine that turns out 210 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque, or Aero, with a V6 2.8L turbo engine making 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque, plus standard all-wheel drive. A 6-speed manual comes standard on the base model, with an optional 5-speed automatic as an option. The other models come with a 5- or 6-speed automatic transmission, with a manual transmission optional for sportier driving.
The engine and transmission combos give the 9-3 respectable gas mileage. The V6 Aero SportCombi achieves 15 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. The 4-cylinder 2.0T sedan with 6-speed manual gets 19 mpg city, 29 mpg highway.
All three body styles are available in Touring, Comfort and Aero trims. The sedan and wagon also have an XWD trim level with all-wheel drive. The Touring trim gets the 6-speed auto plus most of the standard-yet-luxurious features found in the 9-3: 8-way power driver's seat, side window demisters, cabin air filter, cooled glove box. All 9-3s also feature traction control, electronic stability and electronic brake-force distribution.
The Comfort trim adds the 5-speed auto, 17" alloy wheels, headlamp washers, heated front seats, and remote opening for windows and moonroof. The XWD trim gives you dual all-wheel drive, 6-speed auto transmission, bright-finish tailpipes and red walnut interior trim.
The loaded Aero trim comes with everything you see here, plus the 6-cylinder 2.8L turbo engine, 6-speed auto, all-wheel drive, electronic limited-slip differential, lowered sport-tuned chassis, Bose surround sound stereo, and Saab Parking Assistance.
The convertible has a Sport trim that adds standard rear spoiler, fog lamps, two-tone upholstery, a lowered sport-tuned chassis, a ten-speaker audio system and Saab Parking Assistance. It also has a Special Edition package not available on the other body styles that includes special metallic paint colors, carbon fiber-effect interior trim, dual exhaust and 17" alloys.
The Saab 9-3 has a long list of standard safety features on all variations, including OnStar. It also has Saab Active Head Restraints, adaptive front airbags, head and torso side airbags, daytime running lamps and tire-pressure monitoring.
The Saab 9-3 got an overall freshening for 2008, so there were only minor improvements for 2009. Aero wagons and sedans now come with standard all-wheel drive (it's an option with the base 2.0L turbo engine). Bluetooth connectivity is standard for all variants. The Turbo X sedan and wagon were dropped for the current model year.
The 9-3 is in the luxury sedan category, and is priced accordingly, with the base 2.0T sedan starting around $30,000 and the top-of-the-line 2.8L turbo Aero convertible coming in around $50,000. Saab fans will appreciate the more aggressive exterior styling and, of course, the quirky Saab interior touches, like the key in the console and honeycomb air vents.
