Versatile interior; compact external dimensions; huge amounts of utility; decent power and torque
The Dodge Ram Promaster City is the smallest van customers can buy from the Dodge showroom, its compact footprint providing plenty of advantages over bigger trucks and vans. It features a 2.4L 4-cylinder gasoline engine sending power to the front wheels, allowing for a lower load floor than rear-wheel drive powered vehicles.
The engine in the Promaster City makes 178 horsepower and 174 foot pounds of torque-- a decent amount of power while maximizing fuel economy.
The Promaster City is offered in two basic body styles, Cargo Van and Passenger Wagon. The Cargo Van only features seats in the front of the vehicle, with a large load area behind the front seats. This makes it an ideal as an urban delivery vehicle, or even a small mobile workshop.
As its name implies, the Passenger Wagon has a rear bench allowing it to seat up to five people. However unlike a small hatchback, the Promaster City Passenger Wagon still has ample cargo room behind the rear seats. Other differences between the two body styles include a set of rear windows that are only present on the Passenger Wagon version of the Promaster City.
Standard features on the Promaster City include sliding side doors and a 60/40 split rear opening. Load height is only about 21 inches off the ground, a feature sure to please anyone loading or unloading heavy cargo. The rear doors only open 90 degrees by default, but can be configured to open a full 180 degrees if so desired.
Safety features include anti-lock brakes and traction control as well as stability control, hill-start assist, trailer sway control, rollover mitigation and a rearview camera. Airbags include front seat side airbags, side curtain airbags, a driver knee airbag and of course standard front airbags.
The Dodge Ram Promaster City, slots in below the standard Promaster in Dodge's lineup. The City variant is all new for 2015 and offers buyers an extremely compact van that is small enough to be used in an urban environment. Based on a popular European-market FIAT, the Promaster City uses these roots to its advantage, offering great maneuverability while still having a big enough load floor for deliveries or, when properly equipped, for hauling people.
The Dodge Ram Promaster City competes with vehicles like the Ford Transit Connect, the Nissan NV200 and the Chevy City Express. Like all three of those vehicles, the Promaster City uses a compact unibody structure that shares more with small economy cars than with traditional pickup trucks. The advantages of such a platform include a stiffer, lighter chassis, smoother suspension and better fuel economy. As its name implies, the Promaster City should be right at home in an urban environment, where it should be maneuverable enough to get down crowded streets and compact enough to find a parking spot once a destination is reached.
