Pros

Versatility; contemporary feel; fuel economy.

Model Highlights

The 2007 Vibe is Pontiac's entry-level vehicle, and offers a lot of character and flexibility for the price. The interior feels airy, and the hatchback configuration allows for gobs of cargo capacity for the vehicle's size. For extra space, the front passenger seat folds flat.

A 1.8L, 126-horsepower four-cylinder engine powers the Vibe, and it is paired to a five-speed manual transmission. An optional four-speed automatic is an $850 option. The Vibe shares mechanicals with the Toyota Matrix, both of which are based on the Corolla platform.

The Vibe is modestly equipped with standard items, which helps keep the cost of entry low. Power mirrors, air conditioning, roof rails, and a CD player are all included with the cost of the vehicle.

Expectedly, the options list is extensive. Two different aluminum wheels are optional, as are two upgraded stereos with Monsoon speakers. Power door locks and windows can be ordered as part of the $850 Preferred Package. Cruise control, leather seats, a sunroof, satellite radio, and an alarm system are also available.

For enhanced safety, anti-lock brakes, a tire pressure monitor, StabiliTrak, OnStar, all-season tires, and side air bags can be added.

Model News

Pontiac condensed the number of versions its Vibe hatchback comes in for 2007, discontinuing the GT and all-wheel-drive variants that have been available since its 2003 inception. Predictably, the GT's four-wheel disc brakes, six-speed manual transmission, and 164-horsepower engine are also gone for 2007.

Wave Blue replaces Lava Bright Red on the color chart, and a rear cargo cover is a new option.

Value Writeup

The 2007 Pontiac Vibe continues to offer a youthful mix of versatility and practicality. There is nearly 20 cubic feet of space behind the rear seat, with 54 cubic feet available with the rear seat folded down. And at 30 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, the Vibe rates as one of General Motors' most efficient vehicles. Reliability has been good enough over its lifetime for the Vibe to be a recommended pick by Consumer Reports.

Summary
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 Lexus SC, Toyota Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Sequoia, and Pontiac Vibe, and 2005-2006 Toyota Tundra vehicles that were originally sold, or ever registered, in Florida, along the Gulf Coast, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, Saipan and American Samoa. The inflators in the front passenger air bags are susceptible to rupture in the event of a crash necessitating the deployment of the front passenger air bag.

Consequence
In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking and potentially seriously injuring the passenger seat occupant or other occupants.

Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger side front air bag, free of charge. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Pontiac Vibe owners may contact GM at 1-800-762-2737. Note: This recall is an expansion of recall 14V-655.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Crash Test Note
Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags.

NHTSA Rollover Rating

Rollover Note
The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars).
