Roomy rear seat; available all-wheel drive; competitive pricing.
The 2007 Torrent enters its second year as Pontiac's mid-size crossover entrant, and it is now the division's only vehicle that can be ordered with all-wheel drive.
Powered by a 3.4L V6 that produces 185 horsepower and is paired with a five-speed automatic, the Torrent can carry up to 68.6 cubic feet of cargo with the rear seats folded, and it will also tow up to 3,500 pounds. Versatility is enhanced by the rear seats' ability to recline and slide forward and backward, allowing five passengers to be comfortably transported.
Standard equipment includes a luggage rack, fog lamps, power mirrors, a comprehensive driver information center, power locks with remote keyless entry, power windows, an alarm system, and air conditioning.
Safety is bolstered by standard traction control, StabiliTrak, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, daytime running lamps, and a tire pressure monitor. Seat-mounted and side curtain air bags can be added, along with one year of OnStar.
All levels of audio systems are covered in the Torrent. The standard CD player includes an auxiliary input jack for portable digital music players, while an upgraded CD player can handle MP3 files and XM satellite radio can be added for $200. A six-disc CD changer is optional, as is a DVD entertainment system, a navigation system, and a 260-watt seven-speaker system with an amplifier and a subwoofer.
Other notable options include leather seats, remote vehicle start, cruise control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a power driver seat, heated front seats, a sunroof, a trailer hitch, and a luggage rack.
The Pontiac Torrent was introduced in 2006, but the 2007 model still sees plenty of changes. The interior is slightly reworked, the sound systems now have an auxiliary input jack, and the upgraded CD player can handle MP3 files. An alarm system is now standard issue, and a new DVD entertainment system and navigation system are optional, as is remote start. A number of new wheels can be ordered to help personalize the Torrent.
On the safety front, the Torrent trades its rear drums for rear discs, and StabiliTrak is now standard. Like most of the GM lineup, a tire pressure monitoring system is now included. A rollover sensor has been added to the optional side curtain air bags.
The 2007 Pontiac Torrent gains advantage over other crossover vehicles by offering more room per dollar. The spacious rear makes carrying five adults a real possibility, and the potential cargo carrying capacity is generous. The Torrent also received five stars in NHTSA's frontal and side crash tests.
