Pros

Sultry looks; Affordable entry price; Available performance

Model Highlights

For 2007, the Pontiac Solstice now comes in two trims. The base convertible is largely unchanged, with a 2.4L DOHC aluminum four-cylinder, four-wheel disc brakes, and 18" aluminum wheels. An optional rear spoiler and metallic pedals are new for 2007, as is the auxiliary audio input jack added to the upgraded audio systems.

The big news for 2007, though, is the addition of the GXP trim, which swaps the 2.4L Ecotec engine for a turbocharged 2.0L I4, boosting power by nearly 50% to 260 hp. Along with the fiercer engine, the GXP receives a sportier four-wheel independent suspension, a limited slip rear differential, dual exhaust outlets, and ABS and StabiliTrak. Convenience features such as cruise control, power mirrors and windows, remote keyless entry, and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls are included as well.

The usual array of options, including automatic transmission, leather seats, air conditioning, a six-disc CD changer, larger speakers, and satellite radio, as well as a headliner to lessen cabin noise, help soften the Solstice's purposeful roadster experience. Doing so elevates the GXP's price to just a shade over $31,000.

Model News

Pontiac's Solstice aims to avoid a sophomore slump for 2007 by adding a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine to its 2.4L Ecotec I4. The turbo boosts power from 177 hp to 260 hp, making it the most powerful two-seat drop top on the market priced below $27,000.

The base style continues with a few new options, including a rear spoiler, metallic pedals, and an auxiliary input jack added to the upgraded audio systems. The entry price was raised by $1,600 over 2006 to $21,515.

Value Writeup

The 2007 Pontiac Solstice continues to offer exceptional styling, and the new GXP trim provides terrific performance. The Solstice's low base price makes it a real alternative to Mazda's perennial favorite, the Miata, and Mitsubishi's Eclipse Spyder.

Summary
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE REAR AXLE PINION SEAL DOES NOT MEET ALL OF THE SPECIFICATIONS AND MAY EXPERIENCE A FLUID LEAK.

A REAR DIFFERENTIAL FAILURE MAY CAUSE LOSS OF MOTIVE POWER AND POSSIBLY LOSS OF CONTROL INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE PINION SEAL FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING FEBRUARY 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-800-982-2339, PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668 AND SATURN AT 1-800-972-8876.

Summary
General Motors LLC (GM) announced on February 10, 2014 that they are recalling certain model year 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, and 2007 Pontiac G5 vehicles. Two weeks later, GM increased the recall to include an additional 748,024 model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR and Pontiac Solstice vehicles and 2003-2007 Saturn Ion vehicles and 2007 Saturn Sky vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.

Consequence
If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. The recall began on March 10, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac at 1-800-762-2737 or Saturn at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for the initial recall is 13454 and 14063 for the expansion. Note: Until the recall repairs have been performed, it is very important that customers remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the vehicle key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Summary
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. The Passenger Air Bag Suppression System (PPS) sensor may become bent or damaged within the front passenger seat, possibly disabling the front passenger air bag.

Consequence
In the event of a crash, if the front passenger air bag does not deploy as intended, the front passenger has an increased risk of injury.

The remedy for this recall is still under development. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737 or Saturn customer service at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for this recall is 17036.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Summary
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position.

Consequence
If the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "off" position, the vehicle could roll away: (a) for an automatic transmission, if the transmission is not in the "Park" position; or (b) for a manual transmission, if the parking brake is not engaged and the transmission is not in the "Reverse" position. This potential for rollaway increases the risk for a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries.

General Motors will notify owners, and for vehicles that were built with the defective ignition cylinder and have not previously had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will replace the ignition cylinder and cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. For vehicles that were built with the redesigned ignition cylinder or had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. General Motors' number for this recall is 14113 for the ignition lock cylinder and key replacement, and 14133 for only key replacements. Note: Until a vehicle has been remedied, owners and operators are advised that when exiting, to be sure that the vehicle is in "Park," o...

Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags.

NHTSA Rollover Rating

Rollover Note
The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars).
