Roomy interior; large trunk space; comfortable ride; safety features.
The roomy 2007 Mercury Montego sedan comes with a 3.0L Duratec 30 V6 engine, making 203 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque, and is available with either front- or all-wheel drive. The front-wheel-drive model comes with a six-speed automatic transmission, while the all-wheel drive model, which can route up to 100 percent of engine torque to the rear wheels as needed, comes with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).
The Montego's interior space is class-leading in nearly all aspects, according to the automaker, with best-in-class headroom and knee room for back-seat passengers. The interior has a unique theme that includes contrasting metallic surfaces such as satin chrome trim and chrome trim rings on the dash, with a two-tone treatment. Outside, distinctive high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights and LED taillamps are standard on all Montegos.
Cargo space is also a strength; it's larger than nearly all other sedans the Montego's size. The already cavernous 21.2-cubic-foot trunk can be expanded by folding the split-fold rear seatback forward to yield 49.9 inches of total load-floor length, and the front passenger seat can also fold forward flat for up to nine feet of total cargo length.
Front seat-mounted air bags are now standard, as are side curtain air bags with rollover protection, which protects front and rear outward occupants. Anti-lock brakes are also standard.
Two different trim levels are available. The Base model (only offered in front-wheel drive) comes with standard fog lamps, heated power exterior mirrors, dual automatic climate control, a CD sound system with steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, a power driver's seat, and power windows, mirrors, and locks. Upgrades on the Premier model include larger, 18-inch alloy wheels, perimeter lighting, memory power leather seats (heated in front), adjustable pedals, leather steering wheel and shift knob trim, an overhead console with garage door opener, wood-grain trim, an audiophile sound system with subwoofer and six-CD changer, and a cargo net.
Top options on the Montego include a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, Sirius satellite radio, and a navigation system for the Premier model.
The mid- to full-size Mercury Montego sedan, which was introduced for 2005, gets only a few minor changes for 2007. The Montego now has increased standard safety equipment, including front-seat side air bags and Safety Canopy side curtain air bags with rollover protection. Sirius satellite radio is a new option, and a power driver's seat is standard on the base model. Also, new 18-inch chrome wheels are newly available, along with two new colors: Dune Pearl Clearcoat Metallic and Alloy Clearcoat Metallic.
The Montego will be renamed the Sable for model year 2008.
The Mercury Montego is nearly identical mechanically to the Ford Five Hundred, sharing the same Volvo-derived platform. The sedan has one of the roomiest interiors in its class as well as the largest trunk space, with a cargo area that can be expanded thanks to folding rear seats and a folding front passenger seat. The Montego is also one of the safest; it has earned top five-star government crash-test ratings for front- and side-impact performance and is ranked "Good" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in frontal crash performance.
