Model Highlights

Mazda's sporty 2007 CX-7 looks quite carlike from the front and rear, with a large air dam, fog lamps, and prominent fenders from the front, and round taillamps and large dual exhausts from the rear. Yet from the side, the profile is that of an aggressively styled SUV. Mazda says that the CX-7 has great aerodynamics and a best-in-class coefficient of drag, thanks in part to a 66-degree windshield slope and underbody aerodynamic work.

The interior has seating for five adults and comes with two-tone themes including matte-metallic and leather trim. The back seat is split 60/40 and folds forward flat for combinations of occupants and cargo. And the CX-7's cargo floor is longer than comparable models, according to Mazda, with 39 inches of cargo length with the rear seats up--good enough for three golf bags--and 70 inches of continuous flat load surface when the back seats are folded forward. The cargo floor is also reversible; one side of it wipes off easily for messy cargo items. Compartments inside have also been designed for what is likely to be stored in them. For instance, the center console compartment is large enough to hold a laptop computer.

The CX-7 comes with a single engine, a turbocharged, 2.3-liter direct-injection four-cylinder that makes 244 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, matched with a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control. The engine is similar to the engine in the Mazdaspeed 6 sport sedan but has a new turbocharger for better low-rev response.

Ride and handling qualities are very carlike, due to the four-wheel independent suspension layout, with MacPherson struts in front and a multi-link arrangement in back. There are anti-roll bars in front and in back, and large 18-inch alloy wheels are standard.

There are three trim levels available, Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring, and each is available with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The Active Torque-Split All-Wheel Drive has a computer-controlled coupling at the rear differential to bring up to half of engine torque to the rear wheels as needed. The system is biased for on-road performance and tied in to the standard Dynamic Stability Control and anti-lock braking system. Six air bags are also included on all models, including front-seat side bags and full-length curtain bags that can inflate early in anticipation of a rollover.

The base Sport model includes air conditioning, cruise control, and power windows, locks, and mirrors, while the Touring model includes leather trimmed seats, steering wheel and shift knob; heated front seats; and a power driver's seat. The top Grand Touring model brings automatic climate control, high-intensity discharge headlamps, fog lamps, and chrome door handles, among other extras. Top options include a Bose Centerpoint surround sound system with six-disc changer, a keyless entry and start system, a navigation system, a moonroof, and an overhead DVD entertainment system.

Model News

The sporty Mazda CX-7 crossover sport-utility vehicle is completely new for 2007, and has high-performance, sport-sedan running gear and an aggressively styled yet practical tall-wagon body. The Mazda CX-7 brings the direct-injection "DISI" engine that's been offered on the Mazdaspeed 6 sport sedan, along with a road-oriented all-wheel drive system.

Value Writeup

The new 2007 Mazda CX-7 stands out from most sport-utility vehicles by offering a sport-sedan driving experience paired with the straightforward utility of an SUV. The direct-injection, turbocharged engine offers more performance than many V6 competitors along with impressive fuel economy.

The Mazda CX-7 also has a very versatile interior with plenty of storage options, and one of the longest cargo floors among comparatively sized SUVs.

Pros

Sporty styling, handling and performance; versatile interior.

Summary
THULE, INC. IS RECALLING 2,323 OWNER-INSTALLED ROOF-MOUNTED FIT KITS, MODELS 3068 AND 3069, MANUFACTURED BETWEEN JANUARY 1, 2008 AND FEBRUARY 28, 2009 THAT ARE USED WITH THULE PODIUM FOOT PACKS, MODELS 460 AND 460R. THESE FIT KITS WERE SOLD AS AFTERMARKET EQUIPMENT FOR USE ON THE VEHICLES LISTED ABOVE. THE BOLT(S) USED TO SECURE THE FOOT TO THE VEHICLE WAS MANUFACTURED TO A HARDNESS THAT MAY CAUSE THE BOLT(S) TO BE BRITTLE AND POTENTIALLY BREAK UNDER STRESS.

Consequence
THIS MAY RESULT IN THE BOLT(S) SNAPPING OFF DURING USE OR WITHOUT A LOAD. THE UNSECURED RACK AND LOAD CAN THEN COME LOOSE WHILE DRIVING CREATING A POTENTIAL ROAD HAZARD, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A VEHICLE CRASH.

THULE WILL MAIL A RETRO FIT KIT ALONG WITH REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS TO OWNERS FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR BEFORE APRIL 13, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT THULE TOLL-FREE AT 1-800-238-2388.

THIS RECALL ONLY PERTAINS TO THULE AFTERMARKET ROOF MOUNTED LOAD CARRIERS AND HAS NO RELATION TO ANY ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT INSTALLED ON THE LISTED PASSENGER VEHICLES. OWNERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV .

Summary
Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain model year 2007-2012 Mazda CX-7 vehicles manufactured February 14, 2006, to May 9, 2012. If the water is contaminated with salt, such as from driving on snowy roads that have been treated, the ball joint may corrode and separate from the lower control arm, resulting in a loss of steering control.

Consequence
A loss of steering control can increase the risk of a crash.

Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace both front lower control arms, free of charge. Parts are not currently available. Mazda will send interim notices to owners beginning around October 10, 2016. Follow-up notices will be sent when remedy parts are available. As a priority, Mazda will first address all affected 2007-2008 vehicles as well as 2009-2011 vehicles currently registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia. Crash Test Note
Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags.

NHTSA Rollover Rating

Rollover Note
The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars).
