Model Highlights

The Mazda B2300 features a 143-horsepower, 2.3L four-cylinder engine paired with either a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission for 2007. Next up is the B3000, with a 154-horsepower, 3.0L V6, which has 180 lb-ft of torque and makes it a better choice for heavier hauling. And finally, for more towing or hauling there's the B4000, with a 4.0L V6 making 207 horsepower and 238 lb-ft of torque. The B4000 also comes with a limited-slip rear differential. All three engines can be paired with either a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission.

With the three models and two cab configurations--regular cab, or the four-seat Cab Plus--the B-Series suits a wide range of uses. The B2300 is especially frugal, with mileage ratings of 24 city, 29 highway, while the B4000 can tow up to 5,600 pounds when properly equipped--enough for jet skis or a small pop-up camper. The B2300 is only available as a regular cab, the B3000 can be had as either a regular cab or Cab Plus, and the B4000 only comes in Cab Plus form.

B4000 models offer an available part-time four-wheel-drive system. The system has shift-on-the-fly capability from a button on the dash, and it comes with a low range as well for especially low traction situations such as mud.

The B-Series has a couple of different suspensions arrangements, depending on the model. B2300 models have coil springs in front and leaf springs in back, but B3000 Dual Sport and B4000 models get torsion bars in front and an additional rear stabilizer bar in back. Four-wheel anti-lock brakes are standard across the model line.

Dual Sport models are differentiated by a more aggressive look, with flared wheel arches and a raised suspension. Top of-the-line B4000 SE models get larger, 16-inch wheels and a chrome grille.

Base models come equipped very simply, with manual windows and locks, and a basic two-speaker AM/FM receiver. Dual Sport and SE models add popular convenience equipment like power windows and locks, a four-speaker CD sound system, fog lamps, and a bed liner.

Pros

Fuel efficiency (B2300); low price; simplicity and reliability.

Model News

Mazda's compact B-Series pickup is almost identical to the Ford Ranger but has a streamlined model lineup.

For 2007, there are few significant changes, but two new colors, Pueblo Gold and Vista Blue, join the lineup, replacing Sandstorm and Lapis Blue.

Value Writeup

The 2007 Mazda B-Series stands as one of the most affordable and economical pickup trucks, with the same proven, reliable running gear as the Ford Ranger. The four-cylinder B2300 also has the highest fuel economy rating of any pickup. And with three possible engines, the B-Series can be equipped for a wide range of duty, ranging from occasional light hauling to more serious towing.

NHTSA Rollover Rating

Rollover Note
The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars).
