Traffic-stopping design; new interior design; the ultimate in automotive performance and style
The 2009 Maserati GranTurismo is a very exclusive grand touring coupe that promises to be comfortable and luxurious while also providing impressive performance. Two trims are available: the base trim and the more popular S trim. The S trim is powered by a Ferrari-derived, 440-horsepower, 4.7L aluminum V8, along with a six-speed automatic transmission with optional paddle shifters. The base GranTurismo comes with a 4.2L engine with and manual transmission while the S trim comes with manual or automatic transmission. All trims are rear-wheel-drive.
Maserati says that the GranTurismo can accelerate to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 183 mph. There's impressive braking to match, provided by big Brembo hardware, as well as sticky Pirelli P Zero Rosso rubber to supply plenty of grip to take advantage of the near-perfect weight distribution.
An optional electronically controlled suspension system Maserati calls Skyhook aims to strike the balance between comfort and performance in the GranTurismo, adjusting firmness depending on driving style and road conditions. Engaging a "Sport" mode for the suspension also allows for a more aggressive shift logic for the transmission.
Standard features include a navigation system, corner-illuminating xenon headlamps, Bose surround-sound system, a 30-gigabyte music server, Bluetooth and iPod inter-connectivity. Anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control are also standard.
The GranTurismo's interior allows for countless combinations of interior and exterior color and trims. Three interior exotic wood finishes are available and Maserati offers a broad spectrum of exterior color options.
The GranTurismo for 2009 has an aluminum 4.7L V8 engine, which replaces the 2008 4.2L engine. Increased both in bore and stroke, the engine now produces 440 horsepower and 362 pound-feet of torque and can reach a top speed of 183 mph.
A dual-clutch automatic manual transmission replaces the ZF 6-speed automatic transmission. The so-called MC-Shift system was adapted from Maserati's exotic MC-12 mid-engine racer. Dubbed MC-shift, the new transmission is a revised version of the DuoSelect box that's offered on the Maserati Quattroporte sedan. Also new is an electro-actuated transaxle-mounted gearbox with sequential paddle shifters to go with the automatic clutch. The suspension components of the 2009 GranTurismo S have been stiffened by about 10 percent.
The newest GranTurismo S gets wide-mouth exhaust tips, unique side skirts, and a smaller rear spoiler. New high-power Brembo brakes are made using a dual-cast process to combine cast iron and aluminum. They were adapted from the Brembos on the Quattroporte S sedan and can drop the car from 62 mph to 0 in 115 feet. The springs, anti-roll bars, and dampers are retuned for 2009 for firmer, better handling.
Inside, the seats feature a luxurious blend of Poltrona Frau leather and ribbed Alcantara inserts distinguished by horizontal piping on the seats and seatbacks.
As it comes in a vast number of combinations for exterior color, interior color, trim, and other accessories, the new GranTurismo promises more exclusivity than rivals like the BMW 6-series and the Jaguar XKR. The 2009 GranTurismo rides on a 115.9-inch wheelbase and is 192.3 inches in overall length. The GranTurismo's attractive shape was created by the Italian design house of Pininfarina and comes with a full back seat. Combined mileage is 15 mpg.
