Smooth ride; interior comfort and luxury; seating and cargo space; premium audio and navigation systems.
The Lincoln MKZ enters 2009 with relatively few changes. A chrome beltline molding has been added, as has an auxiliary audio input and an instrument panel storage bin. The SYNC communications and entertainment interface that was phased into the MKZ in late 2008 is now standard.
New exterior colors include Smoke Stone Metallic, Tuxedo Black Metallic, Brilliant Silver Metallic, and White Platinum Tri-Coat.
The 2009 Lincoln MKZ is powered by a 3.5L V6 engine that makes 263 horsepower and 249 ft-lb of torque. It is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission tuned to make especially smooth gear changes. The Lincoln MKZ's intelligent all-wheel-drive system is oriented for slippery road conditions and can seamlessly send more torque to the back wheels even before the front ones slip. The system adjusts power from side-to-side as well as front-to-back.
As is expected in a Lincoln, the Lincoln MKZ has a smooth and quiet ride; a front perimeter subframe helps reduce noise and vibration, yet a stiff body structure and special attention to suspension tuning allow sharp handling response.
The sedan offers an especially roomy back-seat area, with best-in-class legroom according to the automaker, and a 60/40-split back seat that is spring-assisted and folds forward to expand the trunk space when needed. At 15.8 cubic feet with the back seat up and in place, the trunk is said to be the largest in its class also. The Lincoln MKZ comes with anti-lock brakes, plus front side airbags and side curtain airbags that protect outboard occupants in both rows.
The standard-equipment list for the Lincoln MKZ is extensive, including heated and cooled ten-way-adjustable front seats, a reverse-sensing system, dual-zone climate control, painted aluminum wheels, SYNC voice-activated communications and entertainment system, a 6-disc CD stereo, and LED taillights. Standout options include the THX II-certified audio system, voice-activated DVD-based navigation, high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps, satin nickel aluminum appointments, and a power moonroof.
The 2009 Lincoln MKZ is closely related mechanically to the Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan, but it offers more interior comfort, luxury, and available high-tech features, without sacrificing the fun-to-drive qualities. The interior stands out for being spacious for people and cargo compared to other sedans; the Lincoln MKZ claims to have best-in-class interior space and trunk space.
The Lincoln MKZ's premium sound system has been top-rated by both CNET and PC Magazine, while the available touch-screen navigation has been ranked the highest in customer satisfaction by J.D. Power and Associates.
