The 2012 LFA has a traditional sports-car layout, with rear-wheel drive, the engine in front. From there, the LFA begins to sound more like a Formula One car, with its automated six-speed manual gearbox mounted in back to help assure a good weight distribution, and its body structure mostly made of carbon-fiber composite.
Power for the relatively lightweight (3,263-pound) LFA is provided by a 553-horsepower, 4,8-liter, 72-degree V-10 engine co-developed with Yamaha. With that, it can get to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds and can reach a top speed of 202 mph (thanks in part to the very sleek, rakish body) while the huge Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes are 15.4 inches and six pistons in front and 14.2 inches and four pistons in back
The LFA's engine and transmission promise better drivability than most other supercar powertrains from the past; with VVT-i variable valve timing for both intake and exhaust valves, the engine makes 90 percent of its peak 354 pound-feet of torque from 3,700 rpm all the way to 9,000 rpm. Titanium valves and connecting rods, a dry sump, and a magnesium cylinder head cover are among the many measures to both save weight and increase durability. Special attention has been paid to the sound of the V-10 as well, with a dual-stage silencer that allows the note to become louder at 3,000 rpm.
The six-speed Automated Sequential Gearbox (ASG) aims to give the driver as much control as with a manual gearbox, but with quicker shifts than you could accomplish with a manual transmission. Shifts are carried out in just 0.2 seconds, and the system is mounted over the rear axle to help keep 52 percent of the weight on the rear wheels for better traction and stability. It includes Auto, Sport, Normal, and Wet modes, covering everything from driving in traffic to racetrack use.
With its mid-engine mounting, rear-wheel-drive, and rear-mounted gearbox, along with front and rear subframes and a very lightweight carbon-fiber structure, the LFA is light, low, and well-balanced. Weight has been saved wherever possible, regardless of the expense, and brake discs themselves are made of a carbon-ceramic material. The double-wishbone suspension is modeled after that of race cars for high-speed stability and dynamic control, but it's forgiving enough for most imperfect street surfaces. Steering is a constant-rate rack-and-pinion unit with electric assistance, and the LFA rides on special 20-inch forges BBS alloy wheels and Bridgestone Potenza Z-rated tires.
The LFA's interior isn't nearly as stark and basic as you might expect from a near-racecar. It includes hand-finished leather upholstery or Alcantara (faux-suede) with carbon-fiber plastic or satin-metal trim. Brake and accelerator pedals are hinged from the floor and aluminum, and other areas get brushed-metal accents. Appointments include a standard seven-inch infotainment screen and dual-zone climate control, and options include a 12-speaker Mark Levinson surround-sound system, hard-drive-based navigation, integrated XM data services, and Lexus Enform concierge services for roadside assistance and collision notification.
The 2012 Lexus LFA is an all-new exotic sports car, set to compete with the likes of the Ferrari Enzo or Lamborghini Gallardo. The very limited-production (500 total worldwide, with no more than 20 made per month) LFA is both an image-builder for the brand as well as an engineering testbed.
With two seats; a low, edgy supercar profile; and a high-revving V-10 engine; the front-engine, rear-wheel-drive LFA is unlike anything that Lexus has ever produced. It's a unique take on an exotic car--and almost like a Formula One race car--yet with Toyota's reputation for reliability and durability behind it, it's bound to be less trouble, to keep maintained and repaired, than Italian exotics.
The LFA starts at about $375,000, which is only a fraction of what some other image-building supercars have totaled. But as with other exotics, its true worth will be determined by exclusivity and demand.
