Large, powerful engine; luxury; off-road capability
The LR4 comes in one very well-equipped trim level. The 5.0-liter engine has 375 hp on tap and 375 lb-ft of torque, with a ZF 6-speed transmission and full-time 4-wheel drive with locking center differential. This combo gets the LR4 from 0 to 60 mph in a surprising 7.7 seconds.
The optional Electronic Air Suspension not only improves handling at high or low speeds, but it can be used to raise the LR4 as much as 2.15 inches to clear obstacles or lowered by 2 inches for loading. And when carrying a heavy load, like towing a trailer, the suspension keeps the ride height constant.
Terrain Response, a standard feature on the LR4, allows the driver to select settings for gravel, grass, sand or pavement using a convenient dial. A new Sand Launch Control feature helps keep the wheels from spinning uselessly when starting from a dead stop or when increased control is needed in low-speed driving.
Hill Descent Control with Gradient Release Control is the system that allows the LR4 to do all the amazing things it can do, like extreme slopes. Hill descent control allows the driver to take descents that would freeze average SUVs in their tracks. The LR4 also has dynamic stability control and trailer stability assist, but those features seem almost mundane compared to these other technical assistants.
Of course, Land Rover wants to keep everyone safe while they're testing out these off-road capabilities -- or just driving to work. Roll stability control is standard, along with air bags for every row of passengers. Five digital cameras are available for almost 360 degrees of visibility while parking or driving off-road. The cameras can be used to accurately line up hitch and trailer, too.
Standard interior features include push-button start, a multi-function steering wheel, dual climate control, electric parking brake and stadium seating for five or seven passengers. Leather seating and wood trim are optional. A harman/kardon sound system with iPod interface and touch-screen controls is standard, and a hard-disk-based navigation system can be added, as can Bluetooth connectivity. The optional rear-seat entertainment system lets rear passengers play their own DVDs and games -- no more fighting.
There are a few options packages available, like the 7-seat comfort package, which not only adds two extra seats, but also rear climate control for the second and third rows. Another package offers heated front and second-row seats, heated windshield, and heated windshield washer jets. The LR4 comes with 19-inch alloy wheels, but you can up the ante with 20-inch, 10-spoke alloys.
The all-new LR4 is Land Rover's replacement for the outgoing LR3. The name doesn't mean it's any bigger than the previous SUV from Land Rover -- as a matter of fact, it's a new vehicle, built on the same platform as the LR3, but with 1300 new parts. The LR4 is the fourth generation of Land Rover's mid-sized SUV, with a new direct-injected 5-liter V8 and a much cleaner center console. Exterior styling got a major freshening, with LED tail lights, a 2-bar grille and improved aerodynamics.
The LR4 delivers the upscale interior and 4-wheel drive capability Land Rover has built its reputation on over the decades. Though the engine of this model is a half-liter larger than the one in the model it replaces, it has the same gas mileage as the smaller unit in the LR3. Though the interior has luxury appointments like leather seats and dual-zone climate control, the Terrain Response system and hill descent control make the LR4 more than capable of taking on the toughest trails.
